Maddie woke up the next morning with a huge smile covering her face and a song in her heart. She was going to be David’s wife. Her smile broadened. Who would have ever thought that she would be ecstatic at the thought of marrying the wise cracking, green-eyed jerk when she first laid eyes on him over three years ago? Her eyes turned toward the same man who was sleeping like the dead beside her, looking adorable in his sleep, as usual: arms and legs spread out, stubble on his chin, his hair pointing wildly in every direction. The sight made her want to wake him up and jump him again, but she figured that even David Addison needed a rest from time to time. She giggled; and no wonder after the night they had! A bright blush of red covered her face and neck when she remembered that lovefest. The sex between them seemed to be getting hotter every day, and the hormones from her pregnancy made it sizzle even more.
Maddie quietly left their bed, careful not to wake him; she brushed her teeth, took a quick shower and went downstairs to make a pot of strong coffee. The thought that it was Saturday morning and that they had the entire weekend ahead of them caused Maddie’s heart to leap with joy. A bubble of laughter flew out of her mouth. Was it only a few months before that she had looked forward to Mondays and the thought of seeing David? Well, now that they were a couple she could see him whenever, wherever and however she wanted. Her flush deepened as a bolt of heat landed right between her thighs. She was pleasantly sore from last night but still wanted more. She was looking forward to the weekend.
As the coffee perked Maddie picked up the phone. She was excited to tell her parents that she was getting married. She knew how much it meant to them and how worried – especially her father – they were that she would be a fallen woman. She laughed as she dialed their number.
Virginia Hayes picked up the phone on the third ring. A smile came to her face when she heard Maddie’s happy voice on the other end of the line. “Maddie, darling – how are you?”
“I’m fine, mom. Is dad around?” Maddie’s voice tinkled through the line. “I have some news. Some wonderful news.” her grin could almost be heard through the phone.
Virginia was hoping it was the news they wanted to hear, but what else could it be? There was only one thing that could top the news of Maddie making them grandparents. “Wait, let me get your father. He is in the study.”
A few minutes later Maddie heard her dad’s booming voice over the phone. “Maddie! What a nice surprise. Your mom says you have some news.”
“Yes, yes I do.” Maddie told him with joy. “Is mom there?”
“Yes dear, I am on the other extension.” Virginia held tightly to the receiver.
They could hear Maddie take a deep breath and then, “I’m getting married!” She blurted out happily. “David proposed last night, and of course I said yes.”
“That’s wonderful!” Virginia exclaimed. “I am so happy for you! For both of you.”
“We haven’t set a definite date yet but we definitely want to do it in the next couple of months before I get too big to fit into a wedding dress.” She laughed as she patted her still flat tummy.
Alex was very happy too. He knew that David deeply loved his daughter, and their little secret meeting had convinced him that he was not only going do what was the right thing to do, but also for all the right reasons – but as the days passed he had been wondering when the young man was going to step up to the plate. And of course, at times Alex lost the filter to his mouth. “I was wondering after the talk we had when he was going to do it.” He mentally put a hand over his mouth when he unintentionally let that slip, and Maddie's clearly audible gasp showed him that it hadn't gone unnoticed. On the other extension, Virginia narrowed her eyes. He tried to cover it up, “I meant…”
“Did you talk to David, dad?” Maddie interrupted sharply, puzzled and a little bit annoyed.
“No, no of course not.” Alex told her hastily; he knew he had to lie or Maddie would think the worst... as she usually did. And he never told his wife he had butted in and went to see David. He knew Virginia would be angry at him as would his daughter. “I meant the talk we had. You and me, darling.” Alex hoped she bought it – he hoped they both bought it; he knew his wife was listening on the other extension and would grill him about it later.
There was a long pause before Maddie spoke. “Oh, okay.” Her mind was running in all directions. “Are you sure, dad?” she inquired.
“Of course, Maddie. I would never butt in your affairs.” Alex lied again. “That might be the wrong choice of words but you know what I mean.” He knew he needed to get off the phone. “My pager is ringing, Maddie. Let’s talk soon.” He hung up and wiped his sweaty brow with nervous fingers. He quickly left the house with only so much as a short wave to Virginia – luckily, she wanted to continue the talk with their daughter and didn’t bother to stop him from leaving. But her raised eyebrow made him nervous; he had never really been able to fool her.
Maddie spoke a bit longer with her mother who put her husband's suspicious words safely away at the back of her mind to pull them out and examine them later again; of course, she was over the moon with the news.
After a few minutes, they said their goodbyes, and Maddie slowly hung up the phone. She leaned back on the sofa and began to think. She knew her father very well and knew when he was not telling the truth. She was sure he had lied when he said he hadn’t spoken to David. He must have gone straight to the office to have a talk with David after their breakfast last week. Maddie felt tears fill her eyes. How dare he?! And what was even worse: was this a shotgun wedding? Did David ask her to be his wife because her father had demanded he do the right thing? Maybe David was never going to propose and only did it because he was forced by her father who had played on his morals and conscience. Tears spilled down Maddie’s cheeks. Of course – after his bad experience David never wanted to marry again. He was probably content to just live together. But then she looked at the beautiful ring on her finger. Her engagement ring was perfect for her and seemed to have been chosen carefully. Was she jumping to conclusions again? Hadn't she promised David, promised herself not to always think the worst? But how could she ignore what her father had just let slip? She couldn't. She knew it would keep nagging at the back of her head and deep down in her heart.
David woke up to find himself in an empty bed. He looked at the clock and saw it was almost 11 am. He sat up running his hands through his sleep tousled hair. He pulled on a pair of boxers and went downstairs to find Maddie sitting alone on the sofa seemingly deep in thought. “Hey babe.” He walked over and kissed her.
Maddie was so confused. She knew she had to call her dad back and demand he tell her the truth. If David was forced to marry her she would give the ring back. She felt her chest constrict when she saw him walk in the room. He looked adorable with his sleep tousled hair and stubbly chin. She wanted to kiss and kick him at the same time. But she couldn’t show him anything was wrong until she knew what had gone on. “Hey.” She smiled up at him with some effort.
“How long you been up?” David asked and sat down beside her. He felt a pang of confusion; despite her smile she seemed to be a little distanced.
“Oh, not long,” she lied.
David nodded. He saw something funny in her eyes. His first instinct was right; Maddie did seem far away and a bit cold. He frowned slightly. “Everything okay?”
Maddie forced another smiled as she nodded. “Of course.” She feigned a yawn. “I’m just tired. I didn’t get much sleep last night.”
David's confusion grew. He thought that Maddie would be walking on air like he was now that they were engaged and would soon belong to each other for good, but she was acting a bit aloof and he could see that she wasn’t on cloud 9. His heart dropped as he thought of the possibilities; maybe she was thinking she had made a mistake accepting his proposal. But she had looked so happy last night? But this was Maddie he was dealing with, and despite how much he knew she loved him he was never 100% sure of her commitment to him. Well that wasn’t true... last night he had been 100% sure she was his completely, but now… well…
“You sure you’re okay, babe?” David reached out to run his fingers through her blonde locks.
“Yes, I’m fine.” Maddie grabbed his hand a little hastily and placed a kiss on his open palm, “but I’m starving. Can you go out and get some donuts?” Maddie stood up, anxious to get some distance between them, he could clearly feel it. “Yes, I feel like having donuts.” She needed to get rid of him for a bit so she could call her father back.
“Okay.” David forced a laugh. He knew something was not kosher here, but he also knew her well enough to see that right now was not yet the moment to confront her; whatever it was that was bothering her – she needed to brood over it. He hoped that maybe she would see things a little clearer when he got back. “Let me jump in the shower and I’ll run out and pick up some donuts.”
“Yes. Yes. But hurry.” Maddie urged him. “I’m famished.”
David held up his hands as he backed up to the stairs. “Okay, okay, babe. I’m on it.”
15 minutes later David was gone and Maddie was redialing her parents’ number the moment she heard the car engine start outside. The maid picked up and reminded Maddie that her parents had already left to visit their friends for the day. Maddie clenched her fists and cursed silently; now she would have to wait until later that night to speak to her father – and she knew she would be nervous and worried and cranky until she knew the truth. She flopped down on the couch and placed her head in her hands.
David watched Maddie eating the donuts he had just bought at the bakery. He had bought her favorite vanilla cream with sprinkles, but he could see she really wasn’t enjoying the treat. His own donut tasted like ashes in his mouth. He was starting to feel annoyed and nervous. When he came back from the bakery Maddie still wasn’t herself, as he had hoped; actually the opposite was the case: she seemed to be brooding... and again, it didn't look like she was going to tell him about it. History repeating itself for what, the hundredth time now? Could it be she wasn’t feeling well? Was she moody due to her hormones from the pregnancy? David was so deep in thought, unusual for him, that he didn’t even hear Maddie telling him she was going to take a shower. Although Maddie had already showered earlier that morning she was using this as an excuse to put some distance between them again.
“Where are you going?” David asked when he realized she was heading out of the room.
Maddie snapped her head around. “To take a shower?” Her eyes narrowed. “I just told you. Don’t you listen?” And with that snippy remark she stomped out of the room. David could hear her heavy footsteps stamping up the stairs leaving him shaking his head in confusion. Enough was enough. If she was going to play the avoidance game again, brooding over some crap that bothered her, that he figured probably had to do with him – didn't it always? – he wasn't going to let her get away with it this time. He trod up the stairs after her.
David sat down and waited for Maddie to come out of the bathroom. They needed to talk about what was going on in that crazy blonde noggin of hers before it escalated into something bigger, like it always had in the past.
Maddie walked out of the bathroom wearing her silk nightie and towel drying her hair. Her eyes were red from crying in the shower; the steam in the shower stall seemed to have fogged up her wary mind even more. She was so upset that nothing ever seemed to be easy with their relationship. Did her father have to shame David into marrying her? She just didn’t know. She swallowed a fresh batch of tears when she noticed David sitting in the club chair in the corner of the room. He was silently staring at her with green laser beams.
David could see Maddie had been crying. What was this? This blonde was going to drive him stark raving mad! “Why are you crying?” He stood up and approached Maddie.
She shook her head. “I’m not crying.”
“You were.” David insisted and pulled her into his arms. “Why, honey? Did I do something?” He threw his hands up in despair, “not do something? What? I'm not stupid, Maddie – I can see that somebody is bothering you. Tell me!”
Maddie shook her head again. She took a deep breath; she knew she had to tell David what was bothering her. They had promised each other to discuss things, but how could she tell him what was on her mind? Being direct was the only option, she realized as she tried to avoid looking into those green eyes she adored. He deserved that much. And she deserved to know the truth. She pulled out of his arms. “Why did you ask me to marry you, David?”
“What?” David stared at her, clearly puzzled. “Cause I love you.”
“So my dad pushing you to do the right thing had nothing to do with it?” she blurted out.
A light bulb went off in David’s head. She must have gotten wind that her father had been to see him. Of course his crazy blonde would jump to the wrong conclusion. He was a little hurt that she doubted his motives, but then he had to admit what she imagined wasn't a completely unlikely scenario – and the fact that it had definitely taken him quite a few days to finally pop the question didn't look so good either, of course. Add the general Hayes pessimism on top, and voilà – cranky Maddie. David swallowed his hurt and sat down on the chair pulling a reluctant Maddie into his lap. How could he put how much he adored her into words? “Baby, every time I see you I get a boner.” He could feel her stiffen.
Maddie couldn’t believe he was making this about sex. “Are you kidding?” She snapped furiously and tried to get off his lap. “Let me up.”
David held tightly on to Maddie who was trying to get off his lap. “Not a dick boner!” he tried to explain hastily. He tousled his hair trying to find the words. “A heart boner.” He tilted Maddie’s face so he could look into her eyes. Her eyebrows were raised in suspicion. David nodded, “yeah. You see, whenever I look at you I have a heart boner, an affection erection, a heart-on.” He stared into her confused blue eyes with green heat. “You stupid blonde, I want to marry you cause I love you, only you and want to make my life with you. Making you my wife is going to make me, David Addison, the luckiest guy in the world.” He pushed her hair off her forehead, “I was planning to marry you long before your dad came to town.” David smiled, “I was thinking of asking even before we knew about the Bean.”
Maddie felt tears prick her eyes at his words; not for one second she doubted that he was telling her the truth – one look into his eyes was enough. Now she felt bad – how could she ever have doubted him? She smiled at him with love in her eyes. “Do you mean that?”
“Of course I mean that!” He chuckled. Then his face turned serious for a moment. “Um if you weren’t having the Bean, would you have accepted my proposal?” he wanted to know.
Maddie smiled at the nervous look on his beloved face; with all his usual Addison cockiness it was easy to forget that he wasn’t exempt from insecurity either. “No, I didn’t say yes because I think we should get married!“ She assured him. ”I'm saying yes because I want to.” She stared into those green eyes she always got lost in. “I want to spend my life with you, Bean or no Bean, and I almost went crazy when I thought you were never going to ask me,” she admitted. “I love you, David.”
He was very touched by her words, because he knew it meant a lot that she admitted her feelings, her insecurity and her love so openly. In a croaky voice he replied: “I love you too, my silly blonde, but I don’t know how many times I am going to have to prove my love to you.”
He said it jokingly, but Maddie immediately felt guilty again. She began to kiss David’s neck with slow hot kisses. “Prove it to me now, David. Make love to me.”
She didn't have to ask him twice. David stood with Maddie in his arms and carried her over to the bed. “You are becoming a very greedy girl.” He purred and grinned at her with that lopsided smirk that never failed to shoot a bolt of heat throughout her body. “And I guess I’ll just have to prove my love reallll good.” And he did over and over all day long.
***
Maddie was lying on the bed in a haze of sexual satisfaction, and she almost didn’t hear the ringing of the telephone. David was out buying some groceries for the house; she had been too tired to even move off the bed after their bout of amazing lovemaking. She sighed a womanly sigh that almost sounded like the purr of a cat as she answered the phone.
It was her father. Maddie was a bit annoyed at him. David had admitted to her that her dad had indeed come to see him for the sole purpose of getting him to do right by her, but he had assured her that proposing was something he was going to do anyway. She knew that her parents always meant to do what they thought was best for her, but this had been too much. How dare her father interfere in her business; in her life with David? She was a grown woman, not a child! Plus, when she found out what he had done it had created problems between her and David, and that was absolutely intolerable.
Maddie got straight to the point. “Why did you go to see David, dad?”
“See David?” Alex tried to hedge, “see David what?”
“Don’t play games, dad!” Maddie told him waspishly, “I know you were here to talk to David! Why, dad?”
Alex knew he had been caught, and there was no use in hiding it any more. “I wanted to make sure your young man was going to do the right thing.” He grumbled into the receiver.
“But really, dad... that is none of your business.” Maddie snapped. “I’m a grown woman and my plans to marry David or not are MY business. Not yours.”
Alex knew he was wrong but still didn’t like the tone in his daughter’s voice. “Watch that tone, young lady,” he scolded automatically. “You may be a grown woman but I am still your father.” His tone softened. “And to me you’ll always be my baby.”
Maddie felt tears prick her eyes. “I know dad.” She sniffled. “But you have to trust me to know what’s best for me.”
“I know, Maddie, and I'm sorry,” he apologized and admitted: “But I can't say I wouldn't act the same again.”
Maddie couldn't help but laugh at her father's words because she recognized her own stubbornness in his. Alex was relieved to hear the sound. “Is your silly old father forgiven?” he asked.
“Of course, daddy,” she replied fondly. “So dad, were you really going to plan a shot gun wedding if David hadn’t been willing to marry me?” She laughed softly.
Alex laughed too. “Well... no but I was going to steer him in the right direction.” He cleared his throat. “But your young man beat me to the punch.” Alex chuckled. “He was so nervous about asking for my permission to marry you.”
Maddie’s ears perked up and her heart lifted off the ground. “You really didn’t coerce him to propose in any way?” She still needed to ask in her Maddie way.
“Coerce him?” Alex echoed. “Of course not. When I first got to his office I thought that maybe he would need a push in that direction, but he was already going to ask you to marry him.” Alex paused then continued. “I must say I was quite impressed by your David. He was going to ask my permission but had the nerve to tell me even if I disapproved he was going to ask you anyway.” Alex gave a little snort that could have been interpreted as derisive, but Maddie knew her father well enough to hear the reluctant approval, and she was happy about it. “He is a remarkable young man,” Alex added.
Maddie was smiling into the phone. “Thanks, dad. And yes, he is pretty remarkable. I love him so much,” she whispered.
“I know, honey... I could clearly see that,” Alex remarked. ”And that man is deeply in love with you, Maddie.” Alex lowered his voice. “Be happy, honey... and please don’t tell your mom that I tried to interfere. If she doesn't know already,” he added with a sigh.
“Okay, I won’t,” Maddie laughed. She heard the car pull into the driveway. “I love you, dad.”
“So, I guess we will see you and that young man in a couple of weeks,” Alex said and sounded like he was looking forward to it.
Maddie was puzzled. “Are you and mom coming to LA?”
She could almost hear her father's frown. “No, Maddie, I hope you haven’t forgotten your cousin Joan is getting married in two weeks.”
“Oh...” Maddie had indeed forgotten about that with everything that had happened in the past couple of months.
Before she even had the chance to reply, her father declared: “And you have to attend this wedding.” Alex was firm. “No one has quite forgiven you for missing Megan’s wedding last year.”
Maddie sighed in annoyance. “Dad, I don’t know if we can get away!” She told him, “we’ve been so busy lately. And David is working on a big case with Bert Viola. I just can’t see…”
Her father’s brusque voice cut her off. “You have to come, Maddie!” he insisted. “It is beginning to seem as if you think that you are too good to visit your relatives and your roots.”
“Dad!” she cried out. “You know that's not true! Well I just want to make it clear I’m not inviting them to my wedding, Dad. David and I want to keep it small.” They hadn't made any plans for the wedding itself yet, but Maddie figured David didn't care about a big event, and she felt kind of a silly reluctance, similar to jealousy, to share that important moment of her life with anybody but people she felt really close to.
“Small?” Alex echoed unhappily.
“Yes, daddy, small,” Maddie repeated firmly. She figured her parents wouldn't like that, but she was determined to have it her way.
Alex cringed a little and then swallowed his objections. “But that makes it so much more important that you make it here for Joan's wedding, so our family and friends can at least congratulate you and meet David.”
Maddie was silent for a minute. “Let me talk to David. He just came home. I’ll call you back in a few minutes.”
Maddie hung up the receiver as David walked in the house; he was carrying bags of groceries and what looked like a box of pastries. Maddie took a couple of bags from his hand and brought them in the kitchen with David following closely behind.
David began to unpack the groceries and put them away. “Who was on the phone?”
“My dad.” Maddie told him as he put a carton of chocolate milk in the refrigerator.
David's face fell. “Please don't tell me you had to ask your father if what I told you was true.”
Maddie quickly shook her head. “No!” she exclaimed and she looked at David closely. “I called him to ask when you went for donuts...”
“When you sent me for donuts,” David interrupted quietly, and she blushed.
“When I sent you for donuts,” she confirmed. “But he wasn’t home and when you came back I asked you and yes, I believed you.” She scrutinized his reaction, and his expression was unreadable for a moment. “Do you believe me?”
Slowly, seriously he nodded. “Yes, I believe you.”
With a relieved smile, Maddie put the eggs away as she spoke, “anyway my father is insisting we come in for my cousin’s wedding next weekend.” She finished putting the food away. “I told him we were very busy.”
“What? Are you kidding?” David asked with a touch of annoyance coating his voice.
“Why would I be kidding?” Maddie frowned. “And why are you talking to me like that?”
“Like what?” David's jaw was a little tense.
“Mad?”
“I’m not mad,” he said, “but I can’t understand why you wouldn’t want to go to that wedding.” He looked at her closely. “You ashamed of me?” he asked her, voicing his very own old insecurity. “I mean, I bet your family and friends back home are all successful and rich. They probably expected you to marry somebody like the Spaceman.”
“Of course not!” Maddie cried in outrage and hurt. “How could you think that? I’m proud of you. And I’ll be proud to be your wife.” She approached him and put her arms around his neck. “I thought we were over feeling like that.”
“Yeah me too,” David nodded and admitted: “I guess I'm just a little nervous about what your family will think of you marrying someone you're not exactly supposed to be with.”
“I don't care what anybody thinks!” Maddie told him heatedly. “Besides...” she smiled. “You shouldn't judge a book by its cover, don't you always tell me that?”
David frowned a little. “What does that mean?”
“None of the guys I dated was ever good enough for me in my father's eyes,” Maddie said.
A little smile crept over David's face. “Not even the Spaceman?” he couldn't help asking.
“Not even the Spaceman,” she confirmed in an ironic voice. “Oh, my parents liked him as long as we were just friends... but the moment I started dating him my father told my mother that something was wrong with him.”
David raised his eyebrows. “Wrong?” he echoed.
Maddie nodded. “Daddy told mom: that guy is just too perfect. That he was odd.”
She gave a perfect imitation of her father's severe voice, and David chuckled. “I think I like your old man.”
Maddie looked at him seriously. “You are the first one he really approves of,” she told him, “and that means something.”
“You think he really does?” David asked incredulously.
“I don't just think so, I know it,” Maddie answered.
“What did he say about me?” David inquired.
Maddie shook her head with a devilish smile. “Father-daughter-talks are sacrosanct,” she replied ironically.
David chuckled and swatted her butt playfully. “I'll let that pass,” he declared generously and added: “Sorry, but why don’t you want to go?” He grinned and pulled her tightly against his body; she could feel he was very glad to see her. “I mean, this isn’t like the last time when you were too nervous to be alone with me in the Windy City.”
“Nonsense!” Maddie refuted, “we were mixed up in the case of the man who hired a hit man to kill him, remember?” She had been nervous she remembered; she didn’t know if she could trust herself around David even then, and therefore she had gladly welcomed every excuse not to go. Secretly, she had regretted that missed opportunity a few times later though.
“Yeah, sure,” he chuckled, “that’s why you wanted to make it a business arrangement and…”
“And what?” Maddie was getting annoyed at his smugness, but her annoyance was also due a big deal to the fact that he was right, and she knew it. “So I wanted to make sure you wouldn’t try anything and…”
“And you didn’t trust yourself to say no, huh?” David laughed smugly.
“That’s not true!” Maddie tried to pull out of his arms, but it was only a feeble attempt for decency's sake. When he pulled her back into his arms she didn't object.
“Oh, I think it is,” David purred as he slowly pulled off her silk nightgown and ground his rock hard dick into her loins. Automatically, her body responded. “But now I’m gonna do to you what I should have done that weekend,” he promised, and she shivered in eager anticipation. He rained soft kisses over her neck until he reached that spot. Immediately her legs opened wider and she began to moan softly against his ear.
“I have to call my father and tell him we’re going, David.” Maddie panted.
“Oh, I’m sure that can wait,” he put her hand on his hard dick, “but this can’t.” He pulled down his zipper slowly using her hand. Maddie pulled down his pants and boxers quickly. David kicked them aside and pushed Maddie on to the kitchen table covering her with his body and pushing deep into her with one hard thrust, causing her to cry out in ecstasy.
“Tell me you wanted this all along.” He began to make love to her with long hard strokes, “tell me you wanted my dick from the first time we met.” She moaned loudly, and he thrust harder, “I wanted to fuck you the first time you walked into my office all cold and bossy.” David nibbled at her lips as he banged her against the table, and he felt her nails claw at his back. “I wanted you spread out for me on my desk begging me to fuck you hard.”
“Oh David, yes!” Maddie screamed as she wrapped her legs around his waist and pushed against his rock hard butt. “Do it now, please, fuck me hard.”
“Oh I am, baby.” David whispered his voice melted caramel, sticky sweet, and the sound of just his voice almost pushed her over the edge, “and I know you love it.” His voice was orgasmic in her ear. “Tell me how much you love it.”
“Oh, I love it. I love your big dick. Fuck me. I love you.” Maddie cried louder and louder until her body shook with the strength of her orgasm. David thrust deeper and spilled himself inside her shaking with the force of his own orgasm.
*****
Maddie booked their flight out the following morning. They decided to take a few extra days off and they were going to take a risk and leave Bert Viola and Agnes in charge of Blue Moon; both deserved the chance to prove themselves as truly valuable members of the staff. Bert was proud of his bosses' trust and would keep everything and everybody in line – and Agnes sure enough would keep Bert in line. David and Maddie planned to arrive in Chicago on Wednesday morning since Maddie’s parents were throwing a party to introduce David to their friends and relatives that night. Although Virginia and Alex had been adamant they stay with them, much to David's relief Maddie had remained firm and insisted they would check into a nice and cozy hotel near the Hayes' residence. Without even being aware of it, her thoughts were exactly the same as David's: she didn’t want to share her childhood bed with David and of course she would never think to make love in that bed with her parents so close. Eventually, Virginia understood, and a grumbling Alex saw that he didn't stand a chance against his wife and his daughter, so with the understanding of her parents Maddie happily booked a room in a nearby hotel. The wedding was Saturday night, and Maddie would have two whole days to show David around her home town. They were both excited to be going away together as a couple. The next week and a half flew by.
***
David flopped on the bed as Maddie began to unpack the suitcases and hang up their clothes in the closet. “Can’t that wait, babe?” David asked with a nod to the open suitcases.
Maddie shook her head as she placed David’s neatly folded shirts in a drawer. “Not if you want to wear clothes that aren’t wrinkled.”
David jumped up and pulled Maddie into his arms. “Who cares about that?”
Maddie pulled away with a smile. “I do!” she laughed. “After all I haven’t seen most of these people for years, and I want to look nice.”
David plopped back on the bed with a shake of his head; his eyes traveled over Maddie’s body slowly, “babe, you can wear a potato sack and you’ll look better and sexier than any woman in the room.”
Maddie shook her head. “David I appreciate your opinion but as you may have noticed I’m pregnant and not as young as I used to be.”
David reached out his long arms and caught Maddie; pulling her on his lap, he buried his face in her fragrant hair. “Are you kidding?” he asked incredulously. “You’re more beautiful than ever and sexier to me every day.” He began to rain soft baby kisses over her neck and shoulders until Maddie felt herself ache for his touches in her most private places; her desire fueled by David's sincere compliments that touched her very much.
“David… I really need to put these clothes away.” Maddie told him with a plea in her voice.
David laughed as he gently pushed her off his lap and stood up. “Come on, let’s do it together and then… well...” He slapped her on her ass.
Maddie laughed happily, surprised by his attitude, and finished his sentence: “...let's just see what happens?”
“I love how your mind works,” David chuckled and took another of his shirts out of the open suitcase, handing it to Maddie to put it away.
“Do tell!” she replied ironically but benevolently.
“Wonder what would have happened if we had come out here for your other cousin’s wedding last year?” David asked five minutes later as he emptied the last suitcase.
Maddie closed the suitcases and put them in the bottom of the closet. “Guess we’ll never know.” She told him with a quick toss of her head.
“Guess not.” David’s voice was syrupy sweet as he approached Maddie and took her in his arms, he looked down at her with a twinkle in his green eyes that caused her legs to turn to jelly. “I think you would have wanted me to kiss you.”
“Ya think?” Maddie’s voice was husky with her arousal.
David nodded smugly. “I know.”
Maddie pulled back. “Really, and how do you know that?” she inquired.
David chuckled softly. “Come on, Maddie... admit it. You wanted me bad.”
Maddie was getting a little annoyed with his smugness and his attitude, although she had to admit he was right. Especially because he was right. “No, I did not.” She pulled out of his arms.
David laughed. “Yeah sure, that’s why you were scared shitless to make this little trip with me.” He nodded, “yep like I said last week, you knew you couldn’t control yourself around me.”
“Really?” Maddie’s tone was acid, “I think not.”
“Oh, that's not your fault, baby,” David soothed. “Can’t help it if your little sweet hotbox was screaming my name even then.”
“Why you...” Maddie shot him blue daggers. He really was much too sure of himself and his power over her. She knew that this attitude was part of his bad boy irresistibleness, but at the same time it made her want to kick him.
“Admit it babe.” David petted the bulge that was evident in his acid washed jeans, “you wanted this…”
Maddie shook her head vehemently and raised her hands in a harsh move. “Get over yourself, Addison!”
Another chuckle, and she wanted to claw his damn gorgeous eyes out. “You wanted me to get over you,” he told her outright. “Real bad. I could practically see the steam rising from between your legs that morning when you were so mad that I was delighted to take you.”
“Ha!” If looks could kill... “I didn’t want you to be delighted because I didn’t want you to get any ideas.” Maddie put her hands on her hips. “You were the one who I couldn’t trust.”
David snorted. “You’re telling me you thought I’d force myself on you?!!” He threw back his head with a laugh. “You are joking!”
“No, I didn’t say you would force me,” Maddie backpedaled quickly, “I knew you'd never do that, of course.” He was getting her confused. She hated when he did that!
“Then what are you implying?” Green cat eyes stared her down.
“I... I knew you would probably make a pass at me.” Maddie had to look away from his intense stare, it did funny things to her.
“And you could just have said no David.” He folded his arms across his chest. “Right?”
“And I would have, of course.” She insisted.
“Oh of course,” he mocked, “then why avoid the situation?” He knew she didn't have an answer for that. “C'mon, you knew you’d be putty in these...” David held up his hands and twiddled his fingers, “...magic hands.”
“Wipe that smug smirk off your face, Addison!” Maddie was lived, “you know no such thing.” She was so angry she was almost stomping her feet in rage, and to him she looked irresistible.
David saw Maddie’s ire. “Come on, babe, why so angry?” He sauntered over to her slowly, “we both know the truth.”
“The truth?” Maddie backed up as he came closer, her fingers itched to slap that smug smirk off his face while her lips ached to kiss him, “The truth is that I didn’t want you at all!”
David couldn’t control his mirth. “Really, Maddie? Still lying to yourself.” He shook his head as his smirk broadened and his eyes grew darker, “we both know you wanted to make it a business arrangement cause you were scared.” He laughed, “but that wouldn’t have stopped you from riding the big D anyway.”
“You!” Maddie gasped at his deliberate crudeness; it wasn't making her feel insecure about his feelings, but she knew he was trying to push her buttons, and it drove her crazy that he had found them again. She clenched her fists. David saw that, and it fueled his desire even more. Just two more steps, and he was standing right in front of her. She couldn't retreat any further, and he leaned forward and put his right hand right beside her head, cornering her.
Maddie felt the door as David backed her up against it. His fingers played with her hair. “Come on, honey. I bet I know how it would have happened, too.” He purred into her ear causing a shiver to run through her body.
Maddie still tried to resist. She put her hands against David’s chest. “Stop it, I’m not in the mood.” She lied, she was always in the mood and he knew it.
David threw her his lopsided smile. “I’m not doing anything,” he told her softly, “yet.”
Maddie tried to escape, but David pushed his hard body against hers, and she knew she was a goner.
“I think that maybe we may have indulged a bit too much in the bubbly,” he told her in a soft, low voice, irresistible and promising, like the song or a siren. “And maybe, after a few slow dances and a few flirty looks...” - he looked into her eyes like he was looking right down into the bottom of her soul - “you would have been wishing for me to make my move.”
Maddie looked up into his handsome face, her anger gone now and completely replaced by the familiar ache for him. Her mouth was dry; she had to swallow and whispered breathlessly: “Do tell.”
“The place would have been overheated with people dancing and all,” David continued his tale and nodded. “Yep, and maybe I would have suggested – quite innocently of course...”
She couldn't help herself, she just had to smile. “...of course...”
“...to take a walk outside to get some air.”
She raised her eyebrows skeptically. “Really, get some air?” she echoed with sarcasm in her voice, but without any sharp edge. “Is that what they call it now?”
David grinded into her slowly, she could feel his huge dick pressed against her and she held back a moan. “And under the stars and the moon I may have pushed you up against a large oak tree and…” he bent his head and covered her mouth with his, “kissed you.”
The kiss was short but still left her breathless. She scraped the miserable remnants of her resistance together. “Really, and I wouldn’t have slapped you?” she inquired.
David slowly shook his head. “Nope, you would have kissed me back, more than once.” He sighed deeply, “I can feel your arms wrapped around my neck as you make love to my mouth with your tongue and lips.” His fingers played on that spot in the back of her neck, causing her to emit a small moan, David chuckled, “and then as you came up for air I would have taken my lead and kissed you all over your neck until my tongue hit that spot and we both discovered how that excites you…”
Maddie was lost now. She opened her legs to allow David’s boner to grind against her loins and sighed: “And then…”
“You would have protested a bit for decency's sake..."
Maddie smiled playfully and whispered in a breathless voice: "David... we shouldn't..."
"But...I would have taken your hand and led you inside, we would have snuck into the elevator, and then..." he pushed her against the door again and kissed her, and this time she eagerly responded.
"And when we finally reached your room or mine, I would have opened the door and..." - he swept her up in his strong arms, and she gasped in surprise - "...never stopping kissing you, I would have kicked the door shut and..." He ravished her mouth again with another passionate kiss and carried her over to the bed.
“David... this is a mistake..." Maddie breathed, feeling a litte rueful because she knew that would have been exactly her reaction in such a scenario, "this is gonna end badly... we should stop..." But all the time she never backed away from his mouth, because she knew she wouldn't have been able to, despite all her doubts and fears. She knew she wouldn't have been able to resist him.
Gently, he put her down on the large king-size bed and started to unbutton her blouse slowly, button by button, with his long fingers. "It's gonna be wonderful, Blondie...” he replied, “and you know we couldn't stop even if we wanted to..." She sighed again when she watched his magic fingers undress her. "You wouldn't have worn that much clothing, of course," he purred while he pulled off her blouse and ran his hand up her thigh, the high slit in her silk pencil skirt giving him good access, "you would have worn a beautiful silk or satin evening gown with a slit up to the North Pole..." She sighed impatiently as his hand slowly wandered up her thigh while he rained soft kisses along her collarbone.
"And you would have worn a tux..." she breathed as her hands went up to the collar of his shirt, and she admitted: "and the sight of you in a tux has always made my knees weak..."
"Oh, baby," he sighed hoarsely, equally happy and amazed because she was playing along with his game and because she had disclosed a little more of the attraction she had always felt for him.
Maddie was all caught up in his game now and went on: "I would‘ve undone your tie..." Since David wasn't wearing a tie, she started to unbutton his shirt and bent forward to kiss the side of his throat, inhaling his manly scent she loved so much. "Oh David... this is a really bad idea..."
He chuckled and was impressed at her self-insight... she was able now to admit how much she had been torn by her worries and the fact that she desired him in spite of them.
“This is a wonderful idea," he purred back and kissed his way down from her collarbone to her breasts while his sneaky hand had reached her silk-covered center; of course, the silk between her legs was more than damp by now.
"Oh, David..." Maddie moaned when his long index finger started to draw lazy circles on her pubic mound through the wet silk, and her legs opened wider, "please don't..."
"Oh honey," he crooned as he pushed her gently down on her back, his hand still working its magic under her skirt, "I've been dreaming of this for a long time..." - he shrugged his shirt off - "...and so have you, admit it..."
His hot lips found one of her nipples that was trying to push through the silk and lace of her ice blue bra, and he took the hard peak in his mouth and gently sucked on it. Maddie arched her back, and her hands went in his hair.
"Oh yes, David," she moaned, "oh my God, what are you doing to me..." she opened her legs wider, and her hips started to rotate as his fingers gently massaged her throbbing core through the wet silk of her panties.
"What I should have done to you a long time ago," he purred into her ear and went to treat her other aching nipple in the same way as the first one, "I'm just sorry it took me so long..."
"Oh, David," she whimpered and arched her back more as he made love to her other nipple with his lips and tongue, the lace-trimmed silk still between her sensitive flesh and his mouth, "why did you wait so long..." for a moment, the lines were blurred, and they weren't sure anymore if that was all just part of their little game or if they were really voicing their feelings... probably a mixture of both.
“I promise I'll make up for it, baby," David purred and kissed her while she threw her arms around his neck and hugged him closely as if she never wanted to let him go, and with his passionate kisses and his magic hand massaging her swollen nub faster and faster, she finally fell off the edge and spiraled into a mind-blowing orgasm.
When her trembling had subsided and their lips finally parted, David scrutinized her flushed face and saw tears glittering in her eyes – and he understood they came from a mixture of happiness, ecstasy and regret... the same regret he felt himself. They had wasted so much time and missed so many occasions.
He smiled lovingly and kissed her tears away. "I promise I'll make up for all the lost time," he said in a croaky voice, and she knew this wasn't part of the game anymore.
Maddie smiled through her tears and kissed him on the lips. "I know," she whispered and then found her playful voice again when she teased: "You're not telling me that would have been all you'd have had in store for me, Addison?"
He threw her his irresistible lopsided smile, all game again. "No, that would have been only an appetizer, of course..."
She sent a challenging little smile in his direction when she breathed: "Oh, David... what was that?"
Slowly, he pulled down the zipper of her skirt. "The start of something wonderful," he replied and peeled the skirt off of her, "you better get used to it..."
He kissed her again, and when he unhooked her bra and pulled it off in one fluent move, she unbuckled his belt and unzipped his jeans where his massive boner was forming a huge bulge. Quickly and with her help he got rid of his jeans, and when Maddie's hands slowly pulled down his boxers and her eyes fell upon his enormous erection, she gasped.
"Oh God, David..." she whispered hoarsely, and he lay down on the bed beside her, pulling her into his arms, running his hands through her hair and pulling her in for another passionate kiss. She squirmed against his muscular body, ran her hands all over him, couldn't get enough of feeling him, discovering him – just as she imagined she would have done if that weekend had gone like they were playing it out now. While his big hands were caressing her bare breasts, she reached down and took his rock hard dick in her hand.
"Oh David," she moaned, "I want that inside of me now, please... all of it..."
He groaned as she squeezed him lightly, and he knew that he wouldn't be able to resist much longer, so he quickly pulled off her sodden panties and slipped between her legs; she opened them wide for him and wrapped them around his waist, pulling him towards her once again aching core.
"Are you sure, baby?" David purred and kissed her throat.
"Oh yes!" she panted, and with one single forceful thrust he buried himself deep inside of her. Her back arched and she dug her heels into his muscular butt while he rotated his hips against her aching loins a few times; they were moving totally in sync now.
"Oh God," she moaned, "it feels so good... I always knew it would..."
David couldn't hold himself back any longer and started to pound into her a few times, her hips meeting his with every thrust, and each one accompanied by an ecstatic cry, until they both came together in a rush of passion that left them both breathless.
****
For some reason David was feeling a little nervous when the cab pulled up in front of the Hayes’ residence. Sure, he knew that Virginia had welcomed him with open arms and that Maddie’s dad seemed to have grudgingly accepted him into the family, but David was feeling a little unsure about meeting the rest of Maddie’s country-club friends and family. He knew he wasn’t what anyone expected Maddie to wind up with – a poor kid from south Philly – they were probably used to her dating guys like the Space Cowboy. And why did just the thought of Sam’s chiseled face and superior attitude still make him feel like breaking things?
Maddie could see by the tension around David’s jaw that something was worrying him. She took his hand in hers and squeezed it tightly. “Earth to David.” She mimicked the line he had so often used on her when she was wrapped up in her own thoughts. He turned to her with the lopsided grin that always shot a bolt of heat through her body, but she could see the smile didn’t quite reach his eyes; behind the emerald green was a tinge of what looked like worry. “Anything you want to share with the class?” She prompted softly. Could it be he was concerned about meeting the rest of her friends and family? Why was she always surprised when David’s vulnerabilities reared their ugly head. She had discovered that cocky David Addison wasn’t as bullet proof or smug as he led people to believe. His insecurities touched something deep inside of her, and she wished she could take his insecurities away – she supposed the only thing she could do for him was to show him and everybody how happy and proud she was to be with him and only him.
David picked up her hand and kissed her open palm then he shook his head. “I’m fine, babe.” He winked. “Let’s get this show in the road.” Before Maddie could inquire any more about his mood, David paid the cab driver and pulled her out of the car.
“You know everyone is going to love you, David.” Maddie assured him as they walked up to her parents’ house. David didn’t answer. Maddie stopped short and stood in front of him tilting her face up to look into those mesmerizing green eyes she adored. She put her open palms flat against his chest. “You know that, right?”
A twinkle appeared in David’s eyes and that filled Maddie’s heart with love. “Do bees bee?” He quipped with a smirk, “do eggs get laid?” He bent over to whisper in her ear, Maddie shivered when she felt his hot breath tickle her neck, “speaking of getting laid, that was some performance this morning.”
Maddie growled in a joking way and slapped his arm playfully, “Is that always on your mind?”
“Yeah, when I’m around you,” David nodded and pulled her against him, “and don’t lie and say that’s not on your mind!”
Their embrace was cut short by an older couple walking up the path, Maddie pulled away quickly, “Aunt Gert! Uncle Frank!” She exclaimed and embraced the older relatives one at a time.
Uncle Frank looked Maddie over with a huge smile. “You only get prettier, Maddie!”
Maddie blushed and nodded to David as she took his large hand in her smaller one, “This is David, he’s my fiancé.”
Aunt Gert let out a cry of joy, “About time, young lady!” She hugged David with a surprisingly strong grip, “and he is a handsome one!” David smiled a genuine smile and hugged Maddie's aunt back. Well, these two at least seemed pretty down-earth.
The couples exchanged a few more pleasantries then made their way to the door, David rang the bell. He was a bit taken aback when the door was opened by a middle-aged Spanish woman dressed in a maid’s outfit.
“Miss Maddie!” the maid cried happily, “I miss you!”
Maddie hugged the older woman, “I missed you too, Rosita!”
David stood silently by as Maddie’s aunt and uncle joined in with their greetings for the maid. He inwardly shook his head; damn they even had a maid that dressed in a real uniform? David took a quick perusal of the large Colonial house and spacious lawn surrounded by colorful flowers and majestic trees. This was a far cry from the small house with the postcard sized lawn that he had grown up in. For a NY minute David’s insecurity about Maddie not supposed to be with a guy like him crossed his mind, but he quickly pushed it away. She loved him and was having his baby; they did belong together, and that was the only thing that counted. Maddie grabbed David’s hand and excitedly introduced him to Rosita; before he had a chance to say hello the older woman had him wrapped in her arms.
“Usted es un hombre hermoso!” Rosita pulled back to look David over closely with her big brown eyes that saw so much, “You better be good to her!”
David laughed as Maddie pulled him in the house by his hand. Soon he was surrounded by Maddie’s family and friends. He was introduced to so many people that he was feeling dizzy. The Hayes’ must have invited everyone from their country club David thought as he looked around at the upper class, polished people smiling his way. Well, he was determined to go with the flow and give them all the benefit of doubt – maybe they were just normal, nice people who wouldn't be looking down at him after all. He donned his most irresistible grin and shook hands, kissed, and greeted more people than he could count.
Finally, the long line of people he had to meet seemed to be dwindling as he saw Maddie’s parents coming their way. He hugged Virginia and kissed her on her cheek as Alex enveloped Maddie in a bear hug.
Alex held at his hand to David. “Glad you could make it,” Alex told him and then surprised both Maddie and David by hugging David quickly, “and welcome to the family.”
Maddie had tears in her eyes when she saw the joy in David’s green eyes as he hugged her dad back. How could they not love David? He was a wonderful man, and she thanked her lucky stars that she had realized it before it was too late. Over her father's shoulder, she mouthed to David told you, and he smiled back at her and winked.
David was awe struck at the uniformed waiters offering finger food to the mingling guests. Wow, this was some party, he thought as he saw the hired help setting up the elaborate buffet in the spacious dining room.
The next hour or so passed pleasantly as the guests enjoyed the lavish dishes laid out for them. Maddie was thrilled to see how well David was getting along with her family and friends; not that she ever had doubted it, but she – as the queen of doubts – could understand his worries. But of course David wouldn’t have trouble socializing, Maddie thought with a smile; he was after all born to be a social director.
She was having a pleasant conversation and discussing wedding dresses with her cousin Joan who just had told her what a great guy she thought David was, when she felt David tense beside her. When she looked at David she could see his jaw was tensed in anger; she followed his eyes and was dismayed to see who had just arrived at the party. SAM. What the hell was he doing here? Of course, her parents would have invited him – but why would he come? He really had some nerve, she thought furiously. Maddie felt David’s arm go around her waist as Sam approached them with a fake smile on his handsome yet bland face.
Maddie unconsciously moved closer to David and raised her chin as she watched Sam walk toward them. David remembered the phone calls that Crawford had shared with Maddie and felt himself stiffen, but he would be damned if he showed this joker that anything he had done with Maddie bothered him. After all, he was the one who had won the grand prize; little Davy from South Philly had beat out upper class, Ivy League educated Sam Crawford – the homecoming queen was coming home with him.
David held out his hand to Sam and plastered a smile on his face; it was so nonchalant and Addison-like that only Maddie could really tell it was fake. “Sammy,” David shook the other man’s hand firmly, “home from Saturn so soon?”
Sam laughed to cover his annoyance that this uneducated mess had been the man to win Maddie Hayes. After all the years, when he thought Maddie had just been waiting for him to finally pop the question, she had unexpectedly turned him down for him. He couldn’t wrap his mind around it but figured their union wouldn’t last. He knew Maddie despite the acid words she had thrown at him the last time they had spoken; sooner than later she would grow tired of this Addison person and would come crawling back to him. He smiled inwardly as he played out that scenario in his head; oh, of course he would gladly take her back, but not before he made her grovel. And how he would love to see uppity Maddie Hayes grovel.
“David, how nice to see you again.” Sam finally told him falsely.
“Nice to be seen,” David replied smoothly, and Maddie was more than proud of him and his composure. With horror she thought back for a second to the last time she had seen them both together in one room – well, in one parking garage. Quickly, she brushed that memory aside.
Sam turned to Maddie with a smile. He even had the nerve to make an attempt to kiss her lips but Maddie moved her head so Sam’s mouth landed on her cheek. “Hello, Sam.” Maddie greeted him coldly as she leaned into David. Maddie couldn’t believe she had ever entertained the thought of spending her life with this plastic man; yes that is exactly what he was – a plastic Ken doll, and he wanted her to be his Barbie. You are not a person, you are a poster, she thought and smiled to herself. David had gone over the line when he told her that, but she had to admit that she had given that impression. Sam, on the other hand, had always seemed to be genuine and nice to her, but by now she understood how false and superficial he really was. A poster.
“Maddie.” Sam saw by her body language that a hug from him would not be welcome, and a red haze covered his eyes when he saw how closely she was huddled near him. He must be amazing in the sack, was all that Sam could think of. Grudgingly he thought back to that phone call when she had told him exactly that. Her voice rang in his ears: He's great in bed... in fact, he's better than great. He's fantastic! Sam wrinkled his nose in disdain. After all, what other redeeming qualities could he possibly have?
The little reunion was interrupted by Alex’s booming voice trying to get everyone’s attention. Finally after a few minutes the room was hushed waiting for Alex to speak.
“I am so happy that all of you were able to make the acquaintance of Maddie’s young man,” Alex smiled at the couple, and Maddie smiled happily back. David looked down at his feet in a rare moment of shyness. “Virginia and I are very proud to welcome David into our family,” Alex went on with a firm yet happy voice; David looked up to his future father-in-law and gave him a short, thankful nod. Alex nodded back. A murmur rose from the crowd, and Alex put his hand up to silent them. “Yes, Maddie and David are getting married!”
David nearly punched Sam when he heard him gasp, “You’ve got to be kidding?”
David turned to Sam. “What did you say?” He whispered angrily.
“Stop, David.” Maddie pulled him away from Sam. “Ignore him.”
Sam shut his mouth before he said something he would sorely regret. He knew Maddie was making a huge mistake marrying that Neanderthal and soon she would realize that too. He would just need a little more patience.
Alex continued when the cheering subsided. “And we have one more wonderful piece of news to share with you today.” Alex’s smile lit up the room while his wife frowned. “Virginia and I are going to be grandparents!”
Maddie gasped and looked at David who just smiled a happy, lopsided smile despite his obvious surprise; he didn't mind that Alex had dropped that bomb without asking them first which he should have done, and he should be told off for it, but Maddie was sure her mother would see to that. She was a little embarrassed, but everybody was cheering happily. Everybody but one.
“What?” Sam’s head snapped up and he looked at Maddie. Now that he thought about it even though her stomach was still flat from what he could see her body was rounder, more womanly. He couldn’t tell how far along she was but the possibility that the baby was his hit him like a ton of bricks. He looked over at the happy couple and couldn't wait to rain on their parade.
“Well well,” he murmured under his breath, and Maddie and David turned to the sound of Sam’s scathing voice.
“You got a problem, Buck Rogers?” David asked holding back his fury.
Sam laughed nastily. “No, but you might.”
Now Maddie was getting annoyed, “What is it that you want from us?” she hissed icily.
Sam's lips curled into an ugly, smug smile. “Visiting rights.”
