The couple met with the head teacher before picking up Jade and told her that starting that following Monday their daughter would only be enrolled at the center 3 days a week form 9 – 2. After the brief meeting they collected Jade and were just about to leave when a tall good looking man holding a small boy with bright blue eyes and blonde hair in his arms walked into the outer room. The resemblance between them was so strong anyone who saw them together would know they were father and son. David smiled at the little boy but the smile froze on his face when the dad’s face broke out in a beaming smile as he called out Maddie’s name in what David considered an overly familiar way.
“James!” Maddie smiled widely. “How are you?” She tousled the little boy’s hair, “and how is little Jimmy doing?”
“Fine, he’s fine now. He was down with strep for a while but he’s better.”
Maddie nodded. “I know, Flora told me. I was going to give you a call to see how the baby was doing, but I never got the chance.”
David was gape mouthed at this exchange between his wife and this strange man whom she seemed to know very well. He felt annoyed and uncomfortable that he was standing there holding Jade while Maddie carried on a conversation with another man without including him from the start. He cleared his throat loudly.
Maddie got the hint and smiled a little sheepishly. “Oh, I'm sorry... James, this is my husband David Addison.” James nodded at David and stuck out his hand to shake while Maddie turned to him. “And David, this is James Hanson. His little Jimmy here is one of Jade's buddies.” David shook the outstretched hand and forced a smile to his face.
