“What are you even talking about, Maddie?” he asked with narrowing eyes. He sat up straight, his body suddenly tense.
Now it was Maddie's turn to frown. “Do you even listen to me, buster?” she asked back with a mocking tone in her voice. “Fran wants Jade to do that clothes' commercial.” Only now Maddie seemed to notice the weird expression on David's face; it had never crossed her mind that he could oppose this idea in any way, but it looked like he wasn't really pleased with what she had just told him. She cleared her throat and went on lightly: “It's only that one commercial. They're offering a decent amount of money, and I can't really see any harm.”
“No, I'm sure there isn't,” David replied in an almost casual voice and then added: “But just because it wouldn't do any harm that doesn't mean that she has to do it, right?”
“No, of course it doesn't... but what's your point, David?” she inquired.
“My point is – I don't like it,” he simply said without explaining any further.
“You don't like it?” Maddie echoed with an edge to her voice.
“I don't like it,” David confirmed.
“Okay.” She raised her hands. “Then let's talk about it.”
“Talk about it?” David scrutinized her closely; it had never crossed his mind that she could seriously contemplate allowing their baby daughter to model, but the way she seemed to insist on the subject made it look like she had exactly that in mind. “I don't need to talk about it,” he pointed out. “My mind's made up. Your friend can't have the Bean.” David jumped off the couch. Maddie followed him and both stood facing each other defiantly.
