Not Dressed for the Party.docx (47.51 KB)
The rest of the day passed in a whirl of emotions. Maddie couldn’t concentrate on her paperwork at all. Immediately after she got the positive results from the pregnancy tests she called her gynecologist. Her first thought was that there was something wrong with the birth control pills her doctor had prescribed for her but after voicing her fears to the patient doctor she had to admit that maybe she was to blame. Of course, she had been taking the pill, which was why she had told David that evening that everything was safe; and the following weeks when they had made love at every possible and impossible occasion of course he hadn't bothered any more to get “dressed for the party” as he called it. These past couple of months of her life had been such a whirlwind of emotions and events that she couldn't be to 100 % sure that she always had taken it as regularly as she should have. She had an appointment with Dr. Hill the following afternoon.
Maddie was just going to tell David she was going to see her doctor for her annual exam and leave it at that. She wasn’t yet ready to tell him about the baby. First, she would have her doctor confirm it and then she would think of the best way to spring this news on him. Maddie was worried that this new development might not be joyous news to David right now – she had seen him with his friends' kids on a few occasions already, and she knew he would be a great dad; more than that, she was also pretty sure in her heart that he wanted to have kids – one day. But then, of course, they had never talked about it yet. She shook her thoughts clear as her office door swung open and like a tornado David blew into the office.
“Hey Blondie Blonde?” He perched on her desk and leaned in for a kiss. “You ready to blow this joint?”
Maddie's lips met his willingly, and after a short but sensual kiss she looked into his dazzling green eyes so filled with life and felt such an overwhelming feeling of love for him. She forced a smile to her face determined to try and act as normal as possible. “That I am.” She closed the unread files and picked up her purse.
“Where you want to go?” David asked as he steered her out of her office.
Maddie looked up at him. “Go?”
“For dinner?”
Maddie shook her head. “I don’t care. It’s up to you.” She actually had no appetite that night but she didn’t want him to suspect anything. “How about that new steak place on Melrose?”
David nodded. “Sounds like a plan.”
Half an hour later, David noticed that Maddie was just picking at her broiled fish dinner. “Don’t you like it babe?” He asked concerned. “How is your stomach? You were pretty sick this morning.” He put down his fork and scrutinized her closely. “Maybe you should go and see a doc?”
Maddie looked up at him with a smile. “I’m fine, David.” He didn't look convinced which she found very sweet, and to reassure him she added: “You're all the medication I need.” That distracted him a bit, and he threw her his half-smile. She stifled a yawn. “Just a bit tired.”
David smirked broadly. “And what could be causing you to lose your precious beauty sleep, Miss Hayes?”
Maddie shook her head playfully. “Gee I don’t know. Maybe some green eyed devil who can’t keep his hands off of me.”
“Well then,” David nodded, “I guess my hands will stay to myself tonight.”
Maddie giggled. “Promises, promises.” For a minute she forgot her concerns and fears but as she looked into David’s smiling eyes all her worries slammed into her in full force. She went back to picking at her fish.
David saw that he lost her again and was puzzled. Well maybe she was really just tired. They had been staying up late nearly every night making love and he knew that before they were a couple Maddie was used to getting a full night’s sleep. David inwardly nodded and swore to himself he would make sure that she would get a good night’s sleep that night.
Maddie was quiet all the way home from the restaurant. David kept stealing looks at her trying to catch her eye but she was just staring out the side window, lost in her thoughts. He hoped she really was just tired and he hadn’t done anything to make her angry or hurt, although he couldn't imagine what that could have been. This woman would be the death of him yet. He decided to leave her to her thoughts for the time being.
All the way home Maddie kept thinking of her doctor’s appointment for the following afternoon. Maybe she wasn’t pregnant but could three tests all be wrong? She doubted it. Was she ready to be a mother? Was David ready to be a father? Their relationship was so new and they had just begun to live harmoniously (for the most part) as a couple – what would bringing a baby into their lives, do to their relationship? She was stealing glances at him, as if she could figure out the answers to all her questions in his handsome face. She studied his sharp jawline and swallowed at the big lump in her throat. God, she loved this man so much and she couldn't bear the thought that after they had overcome so many obstacles, their relationship could be disturbed by any disagreement that lasted longer than a few hours. So many thoughts were whirling through her mind that she didn’t even realize they had pulled into the driveway until David opened her door to help her out.
Later, when Maddie came out of the bathroom, David was propped up in bed watching TV but as soon as he saw her he switched the television off and turned to her with a panty melting grin. “You look beautiful.” She always looked drop dead gorgeous to him, but there was an inner glow on her face and a sparkling light in her blue eyes tonight that made her even more stunning to him. Not to mention the short nightie that showed off her voluptuous cleavage and long legs. His dick immediately came to attention as he licked his lips.
The sight of David’s tongue licking his lips, that characteristic gesture of his, shot a bolt of lava through Maddie’s body. Even with everything on her mind and not feeling 100%, she still wanted to jump his bones. She moved to the bed and David pulled her on his lap. She could feel his excitement through his boxers and her arousal increased. She reached down and cupped his dick through the opening in the front of his boxers. “Hey, big boy.” She giggled as she stroked him; she felt her excitement pooling against her lacy panties as she wiggled her ass against him. God, how she wanted him inside of her! The thought of them making love as their baby grew inside of her just made it seem so much more intimate to her. Suddenly, she realized she wanted this baby that was created out of their love. She only wished he knew. A smile lit up her face.
“Wow, is that smile cause of my big dick?” David asked in his crudely cute way. “Cause I know how much you love it, baby.”
Maddie rolled her eyes and slapped his arm. “Addison, you are a filthy animal!” she chastised, and he just chuckled. Her hands kept stroking him and showed him she didn't mean it. She shook her head and smiled.
His hands were wandering languidly all over her body. She let her head fall back and completely surrendered to the sensations in her body, melting into his. He loved how her legs parted to allow him to pet her soaking core. Damn, this woman was hot. David felt his dick twitch as his fingers stroked wet lace.
“God, Maddie,” he purred, “I love you, honey.” He pushed her down gently as he pulled off her nightie, leaving only her black lacy panties. Maddie sighed in eager anticipation, but suddenly he sat up and looked down at her. “Wait, babe. I was going to let you get to sleep early tonight. Remember?” He teased her as his hands moved over that spot on her neck.
What a devil he was! But two could play this game... “I remember you saying that you were going to keep YOUR hands off of me,” Maddie teased back. “But you didn’t say anything about my hands.” Maddie spread her legs wider apart as she began to stroke herself. She knew how much that turned David on, and his sharp intake of breath and the way his dick jerked in his boxers as he watched her let her know she was getting to him. Her other hand began to play with her hardened nipple. “Ya like?” Maddie licked her lips sensuously.
David couldn’t take it anymore. He threw off his boxers and made a move to climb on top of her but Maddie scooted up the bed just out of his reach; her hands still busy. “What’s the hurry, fella?” she whispered half innocently, half seductively. “I’m just getting started.”
David swallowed hard, his hand found its way to his throbbing dick. “Can I help?” He purred as he moved beside her. His fingers crept up her thigh and he was rewarded with a slight moan from Maddie as she continued to stroke her hotbox. David’s fingers moved up and slowly began to pull Maddie’s panties down her legs. She lifted her hips off the bed to allow David to remove her wet undies. David scooted down until his head was between Maddie’s legs. “I think I’ll take over now, babe.” He pushed her hand away and replaced it with his tongue and lips.
“Oh God, David,” she moaned, getting lost in the moment, all her worries forgotten. “Yes, please...”
He loved how Maddie’s silky thighs brushed against his ears as he pleasured her with his mouth. Her moans got louder. His tongue played over her swollen nub as his hands reached up to cup her breasts. She began to writhe on the bed as her orgasm neared.
Maddie tangled her fingers through David’s hair as he kissed and licked her throbbing core. She had never been much of a fan of that variation of love play until David started doing it to her. Obviously, her few earlier lovers hadn't known how to do it right. The amount of pleasure he gave her just with his lips and tongue was mind blowing. She felt her entire body shaking as David brought her to a mind blowing orgasm within minutes. And she knew he was not finished yet pleasuring her.
She finally caught her breath as David moved up the bed until he was lying beside her. He threw his leg possessively over her belly and smiled into her eyes. “Sounded good, babe?” He moved his muscular thigh over her still pulsating hotbox. “I love how you look and sound when you’re coming just for me.” David covered her mouth with his. Once again Maddie could taste herself on his lips but instead of turning her off she found her taste on his lips highly erotic. Her pulse began to race again. She moved against him until she was practically humping his leg.
“I want you inside of me, David.” Maddie moaned into his mouth.
David chuckled as he pulled back to look in her flushed face. “I know you do, baby. But maybe you’re too tired.” His eyes twinkled with devilish delight. He knew she wanted to get laid badly. He smirked down at her with cat eyes.
The sound of David’s throaty chuckle and the wicked gleam in his eyes made her blood boil. Damn that man! “Fuck me, Addison!” she purred against his ear, her tongue moving over it slowly. “Now I want that big dick.”
“Your wish is my demand, honey.” David moaned as he spread her legs with his thigh and pushed into her with one deep stroke until he was buried to the hilt in her hotbox.
“David!” Maddie gasped as she felt his hugeness deep inside of her. She loved the fullness she felt when she was joined with him. “Oh... Oh... how big you are! I love how it feels in me.” She moaned as he began to slowly thrust in her.
Maddie moved her hips to match David’s movements; they fit perfectly together. She loved how he was pressing her into the mattress with his muscular body and the way he was kissing her – so slow and gentle – was making her crazed with passion but she felt so safe and secure at the same time. She couldn’t get enough of how his tongue was making love to her mouth as he was fucking her senseless. “David... David... David...” She moaned into his mouth as her hands roamed over his muscular butt pushing him deeper inside of her.
“Tell me how much you love it.” David purred as his tongue began to work on that spot just about her hairline. “Tell me, baby.”
“Oh I love it, David!” she breathed. “I love you.”
“Come for me, Maddie.” David grinded into her. “Come good for me, baby.”
Maddie began to cry out his name in passion. “Oh David, David, David... I’m coming. I’m coming!!!”
“Let go, baby. Let goooo.” David grunted as he found his release a few seconds after Maddie.
Only a few minutes later, they both fell asleep, snuggled up to each other. Maddie's worries were gone as she curled up in the safest place in the whole world – David's arms.
***
Maddie woke up the next morning feeling physically refreshed but emotionally tired. Her sleep was broken by her worries and fears; after falling asleep in David’s arms she was woken up a couple of hours later by a terrible nightmare that David was livid over her pregnancy. The rest of the night she tossed and turned.
Viola picked David up at 8 that morning; they were doing legwork trying to track down the long lost son of a very rich woman who was dying of cancer. She wanted to leave the bulk of her money to the son she had given up for a closed adoption years ago and promised Blue Moon a large bonus if they found him. Maddie quickly dressed for the day trying not to think about her upcoming appointment with the doctor or the pregnancy but unfortunately they were never far from her mind. All she could see was David’s angry face from her nightmare. She shivered with horror as she left the house.
When Maddie walked into Blue Moon Agnes was just putting down the phone. As soon as she saw Maddie the dizzy receptionist’s face lit up. “Miss Hayes! You look so glowing today.“ Agnes looked Maddie up and down. “I don’t know what it is but you look different. Like there is something from the inside that is making you shine.“ Agnes‘ scrutiny was making Maddie nervous. She had always believed that DiPesto had a sixth sense when it came to her and David and this was one thing she DID NOT want her to guess before she had the chance to tell David.
Maddie forced a smile to her lips. “Nonsense, Miss DiPesto. I‘m the same as always.“ She said nonchalantly as she raised her hands in the air and brought them down over her body. “Just me. Maddie Hayes.“
Agnes stepped from around her desk to get a better look at Maddie. She got almost nose to nose with Maddie and peered into her eyes. „“Nope, there’s something different.“ Agnes nodded emphatically. “I just know it.“ She kept looking Maddie over making her feel very uncomfortable.
“There is nothing.“ Maddie said as she walked away and slammed into her office.

Dr. Hill confirmed that afternoon that she was almost 6 weeks along in her pregnancy and Maddie was eager to share the news with David. When she breezed into the office after her appointment she was happy to find that David was finished with his work for the day and was waiting for her to go home. She suggested they stop on the way home for take-out instead of eating out; she wanted to tell David the news at home and not in some crowded restaurant.
David was tired from trailing all over town with Viola so he was happy when Maddie suggested they pick up some food and go home. He just wanted to jump in the shower and relax the rest of the night in front of the TV preferably with Maddie on his lap. He looked over at her as he drove to Sun Yin, their favorite Chinese restaurant; he was glad to see she looked happy tonight. He was getting a bit worried that she was overthinking again. He pulled up in front of the restaurant and ran over to the passenger side to open Maddie’s door. He winked as she got out of the car. “Hey sexy, whatcha in the mood for tonight?” He smirked. “Besides me of course.”
Maddie’s lips curled into a sensuous smile. “Something thick and very juicy.”
David’s jaw dropped playfully. “My my Miss Hayes, you kiss your mom with that mouth?”
Maddie’s eyes sparkled up at him as she lightly punched his arm. “Spare ribs, Romeo. I meant spare ribs.”
David nodded. “Sure you did.”
Their banter was interrupted as they entered the restaurant and were met with a harried couple trying to cope with a screaming infant, a crying toddler and a take-out bag of food. The mother was trying to comfort the infant while the dad was trying to juggle the food and keep hold of the little boy who was trying to pull his small hand out of his dad’s big one.
Maddie was thinking of the baby that was growing in her womb as she gazed at the young couple and their babies. She knew it wasn’t going to be easy but she knew or at least hoped that the good times far outweighed the bad. Instinctively her hand went to her belly in a protective gesture. She remembered an occasion when she had told David she didn't expect to ever be a mother, and she never had really given it a thought... it wasn't that she hadn't wanted to be a mother, but neither had she been craving it. Now, that it was definitely going to happen, she realized that she welcomed it – in fact, she would have been happy about it if she knew that David would embrace it too. She sighed, wishing the conversation they were to have already lay behind them, and that she could just lie wrapped up in David's arms, him caressing her belly and telling her how much he loved the thought of them having a baby soon.
David pulled her past the stressed couple into the restaurant. The waiter could barely hear David’s food choices over the clamor of the screaming children. Finally David was able to place their order and as they were waiting for their food, David guided Maddie into a small booth to wait. The couple had just left and quiet returned to the restaurant.
David sighed deeply and laughed a bit. “Wow that couple had their hands full.” David shook his head. “I can see us down the road with a couple of rugrats.” Maddie almost gasped when she heard his comment and felt the urge to blurt out the news right there and then.
Meanwhile, David realized what he had said, and knowing Maddie’s penchant for deep thinking and planning he didn’t want her to think he was trying to push her into a commitment she wasn’t ready for. Heck, they weren’t even married, although asking her had been on David’s mind lately. He was seriously thinking of calling her father in Chicago to ask for her hand, but again was afraid he may be moving too fast for Maddie Hayes.
David backtracked and changed his tune. “But someday of course. Not now.” He shook his head emphatically. “Of course a couple of years at least.” He nodded then looked at
Maddie who felt as if she had been slapped. David saw the unease on Maddie’s face and tried mistakenly to make it right. “We have to take our time. Right?”
Maddie was devastated. He didn’t want children now. Why did she think he would? Their relationship was brand new. Of course he wasn’t ready for that much of a commitment of becoming parents right now. Well, to be honest – she didn't even think she herself was ready, but that wasn't theirs to decide anymore. What was she thinking? He hadn’t even mentioned marriage and here she was thinking he would be happy about a baby!! She nodded in response to David’s question, feeling numb. “Oh right.” She decided she wouldn’t be telling David about the baby that night. She had some thinking to do – or, more, some calming her nerves; figuring out how she was going to tell him and what to answer to any of his questions that may come up.
As they drove home with the food, David could see that Maddie seemed once again to be wrapped up in her thoughts and he could almost feel the wall she was erecting between them. His fingers tightened on the steering wheel in his frustration and confusion. He figured her mood had something to do with his opening his big mouth to reveal that he expected them to have children one day. When would he learn to think before he spoke? But in addition to the frustration and confusion was a twinge of anger. Did she not want to ever have his baby? Was he not good enough to be the father of her children? Or maybe she didn’t want children... he remembered one occasion when she had told him she didn't expect to ever be a mother because her life just wasn't like that, and she wasn't the type to make a fuss over children. Of course, she had been single back then which she wasn't any more – they were in a committed relationship, even if they hadn't talked about marriage yet. So, the question of having a baby with him some day really shouldn't be too far from her mind – but obviously it was.
They had never spoken about having children together but David just assumed that was in their future: marriage, then babies. At least one! David looked over at Maddie who had her head turned and was staring once again out the passenger window in her effort to avoid him. He shook his head as he pulled into the driveway. He decided that he wouldn’t bring up his worries or fears, but inside his heart felt sad and heavy.
Maddie was lost in her thoughts. So David didn’t think this was a good time to have a baby. Okay, he didn’t really say that right out, but of course David never said anything straight out, so obviously he was throwing hints that he wasn’t ready to be a father. Well, ready or not, Maddie thought angrily, here IT comes. Maddie reluctantly began to worry that David would think she tricked him into getting pregnant... He knew she was a planner, so wouldn’t he automatically come to the conclusion that she planned this baby or at least had willingly taken the risk? Maddie felt her heart clench with dread when she remembered how adamant she had been when she told David that it was safe...
She walked into the house after him in a daze, barely remembering the drive home. All she knew was that she needed to be alone to think about when and how she was going to tell him; because despite his feelings their baby was growing inside of her. She was pretty sure, that after the first shock he wouldn't really be against it, but she was still worried. She was simply afraid of his reaction in that first state of shock.
Both of them didn’t say much as they laid out the Chinese food out on the counter. David kept trying to catch Maddie’s eye; he knew she was avoiding him.
Maddie could see that David was confused over her silence but at the moment she did not have the energy or the will to engage in conversation with him. She was hurt, nervous, scared and angry – too much to even contemplate that he might feel very similar. She tried to force a pleasant tone in her voice. “How bout we watch TV while we eat?” Maddie suggested as she took out plates out of the cupboard.
David put down the forks and knives he had just taken out of the drawer and turned to Maddie with raised eyebrows. “And why would we do that?” David asked with a bit of attitude. “We always eat at the table and” he looked at her with meaning, “talk.” He ran his hands through his hair. “But seems that you don’t have much to say tonight do you?” he ventured.
Maddie turned away from him as she began to fill her dish with food. “I’m just tired and want to relax, is that a crime?” She couldn’t help the edge to her voice.
Pushing Maddie to talk was never a good idea and should always only be the last resort, David knew so he ignored her response; he filled his dish, got a beer out of the fridge and strode into the living room. He placed his plate on the coffee table as he reached for the remote and turned on the television. He sat down and began to eat not even paying a bit of attention to the asinine talk show playing on the screen. The food tasted like cardboard in his mouth, and he had lost his appetite but was intent on putting on a good show of ‘nothing is the matter’. He swallowed hard; he thought the games and the bullshit were over between them, but obviously he was wrong. Why did everything with Maddie have to be so complicated? Why didn't she even tell him straight out what was wrong now? Okay, he knew that she never said anything straight out, but he honestly had thought that had maybe changed a bit. In fact, he thought things were wonderful between them. David chewed his food while he thought about the conversation they had had in the restaurant about babies. Well, there really hadn’t been a conversation; David realized Maddie hadn't uttered a word about having his child, not even one day. He felt anger bubbling to the surface and used all his effort to stop it from erupting. Maybe things weren’t so wonderful after all.
When Maddie entered the living room she saw David’s staring at the TV screen as he forked food into his mouth. She noticed he had dropped some rice on his shirt and clamped her lips closed as she sat on the sofa beside him. From the corner of her eye she saw more food falling from his fork. Seriously, Addison?? She felt almost welcome anger well up in her throat – not helpful, she knew it, but better than that confusion and nervousness that were eating her up. Furiously, she began to eat her food in silence.
David noticed Maddie didn’t sit close to him when she sat on the couch. He absentmindedly chewed his food as his thoughts whirled through his head. His thoughts were interrupted by the sound of Maddie putting her plate down hard on the coffee table. His eyes flew to her.
“Can you NOT make so much damn noise when you chew?” Maddie fired at him waving her hand at his mouth. Her hand moved down to his shirt. “And really, do you think you can get more food into your mouth than on your shirt!!?? Are you 2?”
David was flabbergasted; he hadn't seen this attack coming. His mouth fell open in astonishment. “What are you saying?” David put down his plate and stared at her.
Maddie knew she was picking on David and sporting for a fight, but she couldn’t control herself. She couldn’t stand him at that moment, at least she couldn't stand being near him and not being able to share her worries with him, so she desperately needed to get away. “You are a sloppy pig, Addison!” She jumped to her feet. “You disgust me!”
She regretted her harsh words that same moment, knowing she was over reacting but she couldn’t bear to be near him, and everything he was doing was bothering her.
David flew to his feet. “I disgust you now? Oh right, I don’t have the table manners of a Yale graduate or a CEO of a company!” Bet she wouldn’t think twice about have their baby, he inwardly fumed.
Maddie’s eyes narrowed. “What the hell are you saying?”
David crossed his arms on his chest. “You heard me. And since when do my table manners offend you?”
She wanted to kick him. “Well, chewing like a cow and dropping your food on your clothes is offensive!” Maddie raged at him, perfectly knowing she was dead wrong. What she really wanted to say was I’m hurt and angry because I’m having your baby and I want you to be happy but I’m scared that you won’t be. I need you to tell me everything's going to be okay.
“So, maybe you don’t want to eat with me anymore?”
Maddie just stared at him with furious eyes – furious about him, about herself and about that damn bad timing that seemed to be their middle name. “I hate you, David Addison!” She then stomped up the stairs to their bedroom slamming the door behind her.
“You're welcome!” he yelled after her. In a fit of fury David took both plates of food and dumped them in the garbage. Why the hell was she so damn mad at him? Okay, so maybe she wasn’t ready to have his baby – but really, this show of anger made no sense. Maybe there were other issues that he hadn’t noticed – but they had been there and done that; he had already told her that he was not a mind reader, and she had promised not to hold back things in the future that bothered or worried her, and now there she was doing exactly that: blaming him for God knew what, and not giving him the chance to make things right. Sometimes, he was asking himself what made him put up with all that – but then, the answer was obvious: he was crazy about that complicated bitch Maddie Hayes, and she was his lifeline. He sighed, already mellowed a little. But he was still at a loss of what he should do; should he just ignore her and hope her mood was better in the morning or should he march up to the bedroom and demand to know what the hell was bothering her? David decided on the second course of action; he didn’t want to go to bed in the middle of an argument, and experience had shown that it was never a good thing to avoid a conversation when things needed to be cleared.
David threw the door to the bedroom open. He heard the water running in the bathroom but when he tried to open the door he found it locked. He frowned; she never locked the door anymore; maybe things were worse than he imagined.
After Maddie had slammed the bedroom door she headed into the bathroom to run a hot bath. She had always been able to think while she lay in a hot bubble bath, and usually it helped her calm down. Maddie tried to relax in the tub but found her mind a jumble of emotions. She knew she had to tell David she was having a baby, but she was childishly putting it off for as long as she could. Knowing now how he felt about becoming a father so soon into their relationship was hindering her ability to tell him. Although, she knew how he felt seeing the unhappiness and fear in his green eyes instead of joy would destroy her heart. A hard knock on the bathroom door woke her from her thoughts.
“Yo Maddie?” David pounded on the door again. “You okay in there?” He jiggled the door knob. “Seems the door is stuck.”
Maddie sat up in the tub. What could she say? “The door isn’t stuck, David. I just needed a little privacy.”
“Privacy?” David echoed in an acid tone; he was getting pissed off again. “What’s this shit?”
“Please, David.” Maddie beseeched from behind the safety of the closed door. “I just need some time alone.”
“To think?” His voice was bitter and hurt. “Listen Maddie, you can stay in there all night and think til you’re blue. I’m going out to clear my own head.”
Maddie heard David stomp out of the bedroom and her heart fell. She knew how David used to clear his head – from inside of a bottle of tequila.
David drove around for less than an hour before he turned the car towards home. His first instinct when he left the house was to find the nearest bar and forget his troubles in a bottle of tequila, but he stopped himself. He knew that was how the old single David would do things, but now he was part of a couple, and that just wasn't him anymore. He also remembered how Maddie had reacted the last time he had come home drunk. He couldn’t chance losing her just because he wanted to forget his problems. So instead, David just drove around aimlessly until he was calm enough to return home. He hoped Maddie was still awake; he hated the thought of going to bed without clearing the air between them. He knew how their problems always came about over misunderstandings and not talking things out, so as he pulled into the driveway he vowed to tell her how he felt and he needed to know what was bothering her. He hoped he was calm enough now to do so – and that she was calm enough. Nobody could destroy all his good intentions with just so much as an overly sarcastic remark like this woman; David hardly got really angry, but the last times he had been furious and irate, Maddie had been the cause of it.
Maddie was lying in bed awake imagining David in some dark bar throwing back shots of tequila until he was drunk, so when she heard the car pull into the drive way she was happy and relieved. She sat up and the feeling hit her that she needed to tell David as soon as possible about the baby. Hiding this news from him and not telling him what was bothering her would only lead to deeper problems between them, and she couldn't risk losing him just because she was afraid of telling him how she felt. Maddie mentally put on her big girl pants as she geared herself for what was coming; she just hoped he was still in the mood to talk, and she hoped he wouldn't kill her mood by making one of his trademark stupid remarks that she had come to find incredibly sexy most of the time – but not always. Maddie's temper surely was set off easily, she knew that, and David had an incredible talent for that, even if sometimes he even didn't mean to.
A few moments later, the bedroom door was opened slowly, carefully – but also with determination. David entered the room and was glad to see she Maddie was not asleep; she was sitting on the edge of the bed, and when he came in she rose to her feet. His gaze searched her face. It was serious, nervous maybe, but not closed. She looked like she was ready to talk.
“Hey,” she said.
“Hey,” he replied carefully and closed the door behind him. He waited for a moment, and when she didn't speak, he kicked off his shoes a little impatiently and started to unbutton his shirt. She looked like she was ready to talk, yes, but again she didn't talk. Why did he always have to start poking her about what bothered her? She had been the one behaving weird and cranky the last few days, and she should be the one to...
“David,” she interrupted his thoughts.
He looked at her and stopped unbuttoning his shirt. “Maddie?”
“We have to talk.”
Okay, here we go. He sighed. “Damn, I knew something was bothering you!” He snapped his fingers. “It's about the baby thing, right?”
“Yes, it's...” Maddie's jaw dropped when she realized what he had just said. “What?! I mean – how do you even...?” She stumbled over her own words, dumbfounded and unable to speak, her thoughts whirling – how could he possibly know about the pregnancy?
“Okay, baby – listen,” David interrupted and raised both hands in a soothing gesture. “What I said tonight about being a family with kids...” He ruffled his hair, and as usual, she felt the urge to run both her hands through it and mess it all up. “Well, as usual, my motor mouth was faster than my brain,” he went on. “And obviously I confused you.”
Okay, Maddie had no idea how he could have gotten a suspicion about her being pregnant, but she wasn't going to question that; too huge was her relief. She smiled feebly and shrugged. “Yeah, well...”
He took her hand. “Look. I know we've never talked about this, but...” He interrupted himself with a deep breath. “I think you know by now that I...” David paused for a second, looking for the right words to say. He knew he needed to show Maddie that he was serious about everything related to their relationship, their future life; but at the same time he knew he couldn't pressure her and maybe scare her off by doing so. God, this relationship stuff wasn't easy. He looked at her seriously. “I'd really love to have a baby with you...”
Maddie was very touched by this confession and swallowed. “Really?”
David raised his hands again, emphasizing every word with them now. “But – it really doesn't have to be now.”
Maddie felt her smile fade. “It doesn't?”
He was way too busy and eager reassuring her of what he thought she wanted to hear – that it was up to her dictating the pace about this, that he wasn't going to make the same mistakes as at the beginning of their relationship – that he didn't notice her disappointed expression. “It doesn't!” he confirmed.
“But...”
“No buts!” he interrupted and took her hands in his big ones again and looked deep into her eyes. “Honey, I'm sorry if I sounded like I wanted to rush you. I didn't want to rush you. I know you don't want to be rushed.”
Maddie cringed. “Well, actually, I...”
David seemed to be determined not to let her talk. “Yes, I know, babe,” he soothed. “You wanna take it slow.”
“David...”
He went on and on, talking with his hands along with his motor mouth. “You wanna think about it... consider it...”
“David...” she tried again.
“You want it all planned.” David nodded, obviously proud of his ability to understand her fears and doubts this time. Little did he know that he was wrong again.
Maddie sighed. “Might be too late for that.” God, she really hoped he would finally get the hint.
But of course he didn't; he shook his head ferociously at her comment – he had only heard the words too late and smelled some old Maddie negativity. A pang of fear shot through him. “Don't say that, babe,” he cut her off quickly. “It's never too late. We can always...”
Finally, she blurted out in an almost exasperated voice: “David, I'm pregnant.”
“Maddie, don't...” His face fell when the meaning of her words sunk in, although for a moment he thought he had heard wrong. “You're what?!”
Oh, great. Now that sounds really like he's totally elated. “I'm pregnant.” she repeated in a defensive, almost defiant tone.
David's jaw dropped, and he stared at her with a totally aghast expression. “Pregnant as in... going to have a bambino?” he muttered.
Maddie nodded slowly, with a defeated expression. There was no use in sugarcoating anything now. “Mightbe a bambina,” she sighed.
“Pregnant...” David repeated, his stare far away. A baby! He tried to keep calm in spite of the sudden explosion of joy he felt in his chest. He wanted to shout it out, but held back. He didn't know yet how she felt about it... That was what had bothered her these last days? She was pregnant and didn't know how to tell him – and there he went and told her they didn't have to have a baby now. Oh, that was great – of course, he had screwed up again. But then, how could he have known?
Maddie wasn't really able to read his expression and got more and more nervous by the minute. She still had no idea where this was going to lead, and she was deeply afraid of the consequences for their relationship. “Look, David, I didn't plan this,” she clarified. “It... it just happened. I don't even know how it happened...”
David rubbed his chin absentmindedly. “Yeah well, I might have a tiny inkling...”
“I didn't mean that!” she snapped, getting a little annoyed now, but then regretted her reaction the same minute. She drew a deep breath, trying to stay calm – this really shouldn't end up in a stupid fight; it was way too important. “David,” she went on, “when I told you it was safe, I really meant it. I mean, I thought it was.” Suddenly tired, she buried her face in her hands. “Oh, I don't know.”
Finally, David snapped out of his state of shock and pulled her hands away from her face. She looked up at him, still nervous, anxious. But when she looked into his gorgeous green eyes, their intensity immediately put a spell on her and made her forget her fears. “Are you sure?” he asked in a calm voice.
She nodded. “Positive.” Then she sighed with a touch of finality, although her heart suddenly didn't feel heavy any more. “I'm expecting a bambino.”
“We are,” David corrected her, and she looked up at him almost in disbelief; that we had a wonderful ring to it – could it be that he was happy about it? Maddie tried even harder to read his expression. Wait, was there really a half-smile tugging at the corners of his mouth? “Or a bambina.”
She nodded again, a feeble, sheepish smile now appearing on her face. God, it felt so good to finally have revealed her secret. She was surprised how much it had hurt herself to keep things secret from David. And, obviously, it hadn't been necessary. “Or a bambina.”
He swallowed, trying hard to control his feelings, not to overwhelm her with his joy, and all the time his thoughts were racing at high speed, just like his heart – please let her be happy about it; please don't let her be scared off; please let her just embrace it and believe that everything is gonna be alright – 'cause it will! Gently, David squeezed her hands. “How do you feel about it?” he wanted to know.
Maddie wanted to answer how do you feel about it? But then she thought it was better to be honest, to open up, to voice her fears. It was about time, wasn't it? She drew a deep breath and admitted: “Shocked... confused... scared.”
David touched her face with his fingertips in an unspeakably tender gesture. Searching for her gaze, he asked softly, hopefully: “Maybe also a little... happy?” the sound of his voice, showing such a boyish joy, made her heart leap with happiness.
She scrutinized him closely and was thrilled to see indeed a very hopeful expression on his face... like he did want her to be happy about it. Suddenly, all anxiety and doubts left her; everything was going to be all right. How could she ever have doubted that? Her lips curved into a shy smile, and she shrugged in a girlish gesture that touched his heart. “Maybe... a little.”
David didn't reply at first, but Maddie could clearly see that he was getting very emotional and obviously trying to keep his composure; but his eyes betrayed him: they were glittering suspiciously, almost blinding her, and when he finally spoke, his voice was croaky and funny. “Good,” he managed and swallowed. “I think we can handle the rest, what do you say?”
There was the David she knew and loved – relax, babe, everything's gonna be all right. She was so relieved, she was blinking back tears now – happy tears; for the first time she allowed herself to admit that she really wanted to have this baby – David's baby – , whether it was the right moment or not. She nodded and smiled through hazy eyes. “Yes... yes, I suppose we can do that.”
David didn't know what to say anymore and just did the right thing: he pulled her in his arms, buried his face in her hair and inhaled with closed eyes. Maddie was enveloped in his embrace, and a wave of love, relief and happiness washed over her: yes, everything was going to be all right; what had she even been worrying about? But then she realized that David hadn't really said anything yet. Although she felt, she knew his emotions about the news, she just couldn't help herself: maybe it was stupid, but she simply needed to hear him say it. She tilted her head back a little and looked at him searchingly.
"David?"
He smoothed out her hair with two fingers; his eyes sparkled. "Maddie."
"How do you feel about this?" she asked.
He frowned. "How do I feel about this?" he echoed in disbelief, and she nodded. David shook his head. "You are honestly asking me how I feel about this?"
Maddie just looked at him quietly, waiting. She knew, as it had taken her effort to overcome her nervousness and open up to him, he had to feel very similar about it. David was indeed confused; he just couldn't believe what he had just heard. Was she really questioning him again? She had to be kidding him. She had to know it, wasn't she here with him? She had to feel it!
Then, suddenly he realized these phrases had a familiar ring to his ear, and he heard his own voice: you know it and I know it. You feel it and I feel it. Now, that hadn't worked really that good, had it? And he understood – yes, she knew it, and she felt it. And to make it right to 100%, she needed to hear it. A little knowing lopsided smile curled his lips, and finally he spoke:
"Surprised... curious... in awe."
Maddie swallowed. "And maybe also a little... happy?"
"No." He shook his head, his face all serious, and for a moment her face fell, but then he added, not less serious: "Not maybe. And not just a little."
Finally, she beamed and felt tears well up in her eyes; to be honest, she was still a little scared of the big unknown ahead of them, but that was okay now because between them nothing was unknown and unsaid anymore. She could see that he was as moved and happy as she was, and for a little eternity they just looked at each other with smoldering eyes. Finally, Maddie grasped the front of his food-stained shirt and blurted out the first thing that came to her mind, although it was nevertheless heartfelt:
"Addison, make love to me."
David laughed and kissed her fully on the lips, then he swept her up in his arms – and there was the killer smirk again, and she knew for sure her man was back. "Normally I would say ask me nice first,” he purred, “but I guess under the circumstances you're excused..."
She wrapped her arms around his neck and laughed; it was a sheer outburst of joy, very un-Maddie-ish. She replied with benevolent irony: “Oh, I really appreciate your generosity...”
David carried her over to the bed. “Damn right, woman,” he said, “I give my love freely, lavishly...” his voice dropped about an octave, and she shivered, “...abundantly.” Gently, he put her down on the bed, pulled his half-unbuttoned shirt over his head and lay down beside her; Maddie didn't release him from her embrace and looked deep into his eyes, happily getting lost in them. He bent down and kissed her passionately, then couldn't stop himself from purring into her ear: “Plus, I guess it really is safe now...”
Maddie pulled back and snapped in an exasperated voice: “Addison!” She punched his shoulder roughly, but it was really hard to make an angry face while being half naked and pinned down on the mattress with the smoldering face of the man she loved right above hers. She tried her best threatening look. “Don't you dare blame me alone for this, Mr. I-didn't-come-dressed-for-the-party!”
“I'm not blaming you for anything,” he assured her. “First and foremost, there's nothing anybody could be blamed for.” Almost casually, he smoothed one streak of her hair behind her ear. “It's a reason for joy,” he added, and her heart leapt again.
She was very touched and swallowed; almost all by themselves, her hands ran up his muscular back underneath his t-shirt, enjoying the warmth of his skin underneath her fingertips and the feeling of eager anticipation. “And second?”
“And second...” he placed a butterfly kiss on the side of her throat, and she sighed with closed eyes, “...there are no obstacles that could block my super sperm.”
Her eyes flew open again, and she cringed in fake disgust. “Oh, Addison, you really are the crudest...”
David chuckled. “And you despise me, I know.”
She looked into his green eyes glittering with love. “So much,” she replied and pulled him close again, whispering against his mouth: “Kiss me...”
He smiled, ran his hand through her hair and the bent down to kiss her again on the lips, very slowly and tenderly at first, taking his time, moving his mouth over her lips from one side to the other, teasing, caressing and nibbling. Maddie was lost, totally and hopelessly lost in his kisses, and it was simply wonderful. Her hands stroked his back while he was making love to her mouth, but after a bit they started to tug restlessly at the t-shirt he was still wearing; she wanted it off, she wanted and needed to feel his bare skin against hers.
David stood up for a moment, and Maddie propped herself up on one elbow and watched him getting rid of all the unnecessary clothing. She watched him without shame, and really she knew by now there was nothing to be ashamed about. She admired him while he pulled the t-shirt over his head and threw it on the floor, and a sultry smile curved her lips when he unbuckled his belt and unzipped his pants. They ended on the floor beside the shirt and the t-shirt, and when he was clad only in his boxers, Maddie glanced appreciatively at his buff body. He was already very happy to see her, and her eyes glittered when she reached out for him.
“Let me take them off,” she demanded, but David stretched himself out beside her again and took her hands, placing them on his chest.
“Easy,” he murmured, “we have all the time in the world.” He took off with ease where he had left and kissed his way from her lips down the side of her throat, lingering especially on that spot that drove her wild and turned her to mush at the same time, all the while caressing her body all over with his expert hands – they were not urging or demanding, but very tender and sensual, and Maddie had the intense sensation of just simply melting underneath them; her whole body seemed to vibrate.
“Oh, David,” she sighed when he kissed his way along her collarbones and down between her breasts, “David...”
His hands glided over the silk of her nightie, and suddenly, he placed his left cheek on her flat belly, and she saw him closing his eyes, and expression of pure bliss on his face that brought almost tears to her eyes. “Sorry, buddy,” he whispered in a croaky voice, “but it might get a little rough in there from time to time.” Maddie smiled through her tears and shook her head. “That's because your mommy and daddy are crazy about each other, and sorry but you are not going to change that...” He kissed her belly gently, “and we love you too.”
With a last kiss on her belly, David kissed his way up again, worshipping both her voluptuous breasts, as his hand glided down the smooth silken front of her nightie. When he had reached her panty-covered center she moaned softly as she lifted her hips a little and pushed her pubic area into his waiting hand.
The whole length of David's body was huddled against hers, and their contours fit together perfectly. The feeling of his muscular thigh, his hard arousal pressed against her thigh, mixed with his mouth on her nipples and his hand caressing her most intimately through her damp panties almost drove her crazy, and even though she was experiencing an incredible bliss, she wasn't so happy with that all the time in the world.
“Please let me,” she asked again, and this time he didn't avoid her hands when she reached down for his boxers. She couldn't get a proper hold on them, and so she rose up to her knees and pulled them down his long legs, discarding them on the floor along with his other garments. His dick stood to attention, and Maddie couldn't get rid of her own panties fast enough; the sodden silk joined the collection puddled on the floor.
He reached out for her, and after admiring him for a moment, Maddie swung one leg on the other side of him and straddled David, placing her hands on his bare chest, fingers widely spread, enjoying the feeling of his chest hair against her palms which she always found highly erotic. Slowly, she glided down, taking him in completely, letting out a long moan when she felt his whole body tense and shudder. The feeling of his hardness filling her so completely made her shiver too; she let her head fall back, all lost in herself and in her passion, and took her time slowly rotating her hips in a lazy dance.
“Oh God, Maddie...” David groaned and put both hands on her hips, urging her now and spurring her on. She understood and started to move her hips up and down now, slowly first, but then the pace increased and her moves became wilder and faster and harder. She felt the tension building up in her, and she couldn't stop.
Obviously, David had the same intention because he grasped her hips more firmly and thrust his hips up when she pushed hers down, and the sensation couldn't have been more intense. It took only a few more thrusts, and they both came together in a rush of ecstasy, calling out each other's name.
Maddie collapsed on top of David with a deep ecstatic sigh, but he caught her firmly in his arms, and in one fluent move he flipped her over onto her back and was on top of her now, still inside her, and started to move his hips again, not having had enough of her yet. She was thrilled and wrapped her arms and legs around his body, enjoying the feeling of his sweat on her skin, and moved her body once again in sync with his while he was making love to her again with slow, deep thrusts.
When he saw in her eyes that she was almost ready to fall apart again, his mouth covered hers again in a deep passionate kiss, and that pushed her over the edge again. When he felt her throbbing core quiver and clench around him tightly, he found his own release for the second time.
Afterward, they were wrapped up in each other's arms, and when she could breathe again, Maddie admitted: “I was afraid you wouldn't be thrilled about the baby.”
David chuckled a little and replied: “And I was afraid you wouldn't want to have a baby at all.”
She looked at him in disbelief, and they both laughed sheepishly. “When will we ever learn?” she finally asked.
“Probably never,” he said with concern in his voice, “but I think we're getting better at it.”
She gave a little snort. “You really do?”
“I really do.”
Maddie placed a kiss on his bare chest and snuggled up even closer to him. “I love you, Addison.”
“I love you too,” he replied without hesitation and turned off the light. “Now sleep. You're tired.”
“Yes, I really am.” She yawned.
“Good night, baby,” David's voice whispered in the dark.
“Good night,” she replied with a smile on her face.
“I wasn't talking to you, woman.” She felt his hand creep down to her belly and rest there. A single tear trickled from the corner of her eye down her cheek when she put her hand over his.
“Good night, baby.”
