Chapter 7 Who's the Boss?

“Why would Lou LaSalle call us?” Maddie asked with a frown, picking up the phone curiously.

David shrugged as he perched on the edge of her desk. He was curious too. The last run in they had with the successful owner of LaSalle Investigations was years ago when David had helped a man find a stolen rolodex. At that time David had been hurt and angry that Maddie had thought it was a good idea to sell the agency to LaSalle; looking at it in an unbiased way, from her point of view that decision was absolutely understandable, he admitted to himself; but the way she had coolly told him it was a pure business decision, as if the time they had spent together didn't mean anything to her – that had hurt him surprisingly deeply. Maddie had regretted what she had done almost immediately after closing the deal, and luckily, David had been able to turn that deal around and Maddie had happily kept Blue Moon. Memories.

Maddie got off the phone with a shocked expression covering her face. “Lou LaSalle is retiring, and he is offering to sell us his Los Angeles clients!” Maddie shook her head, “but I don’t think we can afford to.”

“What?!” David exclaimed excitedly and leapt to his feet. “But that's great!”

“I'm not sure it's great,” Maddie contradicted. “Besides, as I said, we probably can't afford it.”

“Are you crazy?” David blurted out. “We can’t afford not to jump at his offer!”

Maddie looked at David like he had three heads. “I say NO.” She shook her head again. “There is no way we can come up with that kind of money!”

He couldn't believe she really didn't seem to realize what an opportunity this was. “Do you have any idea how much money those clients will bring into Blue Moon?” David’s jaw tensed and he stared at Maddie with green laser beams. “ I mean, even if we have to take out a business loan it’ll be worth it! So I say YES!” He folded his arms.

Maddie pushed herself to her feet; her eyes flashing blue daggers his way. “Well since this is MY business; it’s NO!” she said in a cutting voice, but when the words left her mouth Maddie wanted to choke them back. She saw the hurt in David’s eyes. What he had said last night about her tendency to also speak before she thought had been right. “David, I’m sorry...” Maddie made a move to approach him but David looked at her with green chips of ice so cold and sharp she stopped in the middle of the move.

He backed away and turned to leave her office. “Yeah, me too.” And he slammed out banging the door against the wall in his anger.

“David!” Maddie wanted to leap after him, but at that moment Agnes' voice buzzed through the intercom.

Furiously, she stormed into the main office through the open door. “Agnes, there's no need to buzz me if the door's wide open and I'm already half out!” she snapped, then covered her eyes for a moment. “I'm sorry,” she had to apologize again, this time through gritted teeth.

Agnes just nodded-she was used to Maddie’s outbursts - and then told her: “Miss Hayes, I was just going to remind you of your appointment with your lawyer. You have to be at his office in half an hour.”

“Damn!” Maddie stopped dead in her tracks, her fists clenched. She had totally forgotten about that appointment, but she couldn't delay it, especially not now. She threw a longing glance at David's closed office door, but that would have to wait. She couldn't be late to her appointment.

“Good,” she said curtly and turned around to get her purse, “I'm leaving.”

When she got back to the agency two hours later, David wasn't in. Maddie hoped – no, she believed – he was mature enough to just drive around to brood, maybe have a drink or two to cool off, but not drink himself into oblivion .

When he stormed out of Maddie’s office David stomped across the staff‘s area in anger. Entering his office he slammed the door behind him, flopped down in his chair and started to spin. Usually spinning around in his chair cooled off his anger, but not today. He was actually more hurt than angry. Sure – the business was under her name and had been built with her money, but he had been there with her side by side building it into the semi-successful agency it was today. He guessed though in her head she was still his boss.

Even though the business was not his in any way, he still felt he was her true partner in business and life, and he had really though that Maddie saw it the same way by now. He knew many times he hadn't acted like a responsible partner, and he saw that now – but he had matured over the years. It really cut deep that she didn’t think enough of him to help make decisions for Blue Moon and obviously was not even willing to consider his ideas. He drank an entire carton of chocolate milk before he decided to head for home. Blue Moon was not where he felt comfortable being today. But now he was heading home to her house. David felt a heavy stone crush his chest.

When Maddie finally got home, she was relieved to see light in the living room. She closed the entrance door very quietly behind her and took the legal documents out of her purse. Then she put the purse down and crossed the hall, heading towards the living room. David was sitting on the sofa, a carton of chocolate milk in his hand; the tv was on, but he didn't seem to be really looking at it.

She drew a deep breath, entered the room and walked up to him. He kept his stare fixed on the tv and slowly took a sip from the carton. He didn't look up at her.

“Hi,” she said quietly.

He took another long sip before he finally looked at her. “Hi,” was the curt reply; he didn't sound mad anymore, but not very warm either. Maddie couldn't really blame him.

“I'm glad you're home,” she tried again, but got no real reaction from David; he just kept looking at her without saying another word. Only the tiniest nod of his head showed that he had heard her.

Well, Maddie had never shied back from an apology when she owed one, and this was definitely the moment for it. Not that she had been really wrong with what she had said, but the way she had tried to make her point had been unnecessarily harsh and tactless. She knew that. But she wanted him also to understand her point.

“David, I'm sorry,” she said ruefully and sighed. “It's just that it took us so long to get Blue Moon to where it's now...”

“Maddie,” David interrupted and raised both hands, “really, you don't have to say anything.” She fell silent and cringed a little, but his voice wasn't sarcastic or mad at all; he didn't even sound hurt, not happy either. It was more a neutral tone. “I mean, what you said was true. I see your points, and I don't agree with your arguments, but I don't want to fight about it.” He was looking directly into her eyes now. “Whatever decision you'll take, I don't have a say in it anyway. It's your agency.”

For a moment, she lost track of what she was planning to do. But when she looked at him again he looked so serious, so mature when he spoke, that she knew she was doing the right thing. “No, it's not,” she replied and placed the legal documents on the living room table in front of him.

David frowned at her, looked at the papers and then threw her a questioning glance. “What's that?” he asked, motioning to the papers with his hand.

“See for yourself,” she replied and knotted her hands together, suddenly a little nervous. What if he got offended because he felt like she was trying to give him a handout to make him feel more equal to her? That would give him a completely wrong impression of her intentions.

Slowly, David reached for the papers, still scrutinizing her, but her facial expression didn't give away anything. Finally, he lowered his gaze onto the document in his hand and read for a few moments in silence.

“I don't understand,” he finally murmured, not showing yet what he felt about this.

“I've been planning to do this for a long time,” Maddie hastily explained, “I started thinking about it even before I knew we were having the Bean.”

David looked up at her, and she saw confusion and disbelief on his handsome face. “Why?” he managed.

She shrugged. “We are partners in life. I don't want to be your boss anymore, I want you to be my true and official partner in the agency too.”

David slowly shook his head, a barely readable expression on his face. It mirrored a mix of emotions; surprise, remorse – and yes, also joy. But mixed with a tinge of sadness. Maddie didn't understand that.

“Maddie, I can't do this,” he said slowly and carefully, almost reluctantly put the papers down on the table again.

She slumped down on the couch beside him. “Why?!” she asked in disbelief.

He looked down at his hands and sighed. “Look, it might surprise you, but I do have saved some money, a very tiny amount of money though...” His eyes flew up to her face again, and the sight of them almost took her breath away. “I'm afraid it's not enough to buy into Blue Moon.”

Maddie closed her eyes for a second and sighed with relief. When she looked at him again, she saw him frown in confusion. “David, you don't have to buy into Blue Moon.”

“But...”

“No buts”, she interrupted firmly and took both his hands in her smaller ones. “I was planning to give this to you as a wedding present, but I figured that now, with that LaSalle offer...” she shrugged and finished a little sheepishly: “...might be a good time for it.”

“Maddie...”

“To show you,” she added, determined not to let him bring up any arguments against accepting her gift, “that I do value your opinion and trust us that we are grown up enough by now to find a solution together.”

David looked down at the papers again, then his stare wandered to their joint hands. He almost couldn't believe what just had happened. Not only did she really want him to be her equal partner in her business – which meant that she was giving up another bit of control – no, she also wanted to make him her partner before deciding about Lou LaSalle's offer. She wanted him to decide with her. Now, that was a sign of trust if he ever had seen one, and even if this was about business, David knew that her gift meant so much more. He squeezed her hands, deeply touched. “Wow,” he finally croaked, barely able to speak. “I don't know what to say.”

Maddie swallowed and blinked. She could see that he was almost overwhelmed, and in a good way. Suddenly, she felt so light inside she could have danced. She smiled. “Just say yes, partner.”

“And you're sure you wanna do this?” he inquired.

“Surer than sure,” she answered, and finally he returned her smile.

David pursed his lips and nodded slowly. “Partners,” he murmured in a husky voice, “I like that.”

“So that's a yes?” she wanted to make sure.

“So that's a yes,” he confirmed and reached out for her. “You never cease to amaze me, Blondie.”

Maddie put her hands on his shoulders. “Listen, David... about Lou LaSalle...”

“Not now,” he cut her off, shaking his head. “Plenty of time to talk about this tomorrow. Now...” he pulled her close to him, and she felt the familiar heat spread in her belly and flow through her veins, bringing the pleasant warmth into all of her body and her heart that she would forever associate with David. “Now I want to thank you properly for this wonderful gift...”

She smiled up at him, and he bent down to kiss her, pulling her in really close, holding her firmly pressed to his body, close to his heart. Maddie slid her arms around his neck, and they kissed tenderly and with increasing passion for a few minutes, before David pulled back again for a moment, scrutinizing her closely.

“Equal partners, huh?” he purred.

“Equal partners,” she confirmed happily and a little breathlessly.

He raised his left hand and traced her jawline with his index finger. “Just one thing...”

“What's that?” she tilted her head a little.

He winked at her, a wicked glint in his eyes. “I'm still the boss in the bedroom.”

Maddie smiled a sultry smile. “Whatever you say, handsome. Your wish is my command.“ She winked seductively which made his knees weak, a feeling that no woman had ever evoked in him before Maddie, “And I’ll just do as I’m told,“ she added in a husky voice, deliberately tempting him with the phrase that he had used on her so often before.

David’s mouth was dry. “And do as you're told... always.“ He pulled Maddie into his arms, his mouth covered hers in a breathless kiss leaving them both feeling dazed yet so very alive. “Upstairs, my wench.“ He whispered into her ear as he stood up pulling her off the couch and playfully smacked her butt as he gently pushed her toward the stairs.

Maddie pulled away, slightly tilted her head so that she met his eyes with her wide blue ones, and whispered shyly: “Yes, Master, whatever you shall have me do. I’m all yours.“ She looked down coyly. “Just promise to be gentle. For I’ve never known a man before.“

David’s dick jerked in his pants. What surprises lurked in that blonde head? He couldn’t wait to find out one by one. He picked her up in his strong arms, “Oh, I’ll be gentle, baby. But be sure I’m gonna fuck you slow all night long.“ She fluttered her long eyelashes, and he added: “And be sure you're gonna like it.”

When they reached their bedroom, David laid Maddie gently on the bed. He leaned over and began to kiss her until she was breathless as he slowly peeled off every inch of her clothes, covering each bit of exposed skin with a slow lazy kiss until she was writhing naked on the bed. “Oh David, make love to me, please,“ she pleaded, watching him with hooded eyes as he moved away from her.

David chuckled as he removed his shirt and tossed it on a nearby chair. “Oh, I will, my horny little girl.“ He licked his lips as his hand pulled down his zipper inch by inch. The way Maddie’s eyes were glued to his zipper was causing his blood to boil. “Ya like?“ He asked as he pulled out his huge boner, his hands stroking the rigid shaft lazily.

“Oh my, that is so big? Will it fit in me?“ Maddie exclaimed, feigning worry

David nodded. “Oh yes, It’ll fit real good honey. And it's gonna make you feel real good,“ he purred as he neared the bed; Maddie reached out and pulled down David’s pants and boxers. David kicked them aside. He was standing over Maddie with his huge boner in his hand. She licked her lips as her hands reached out for him. “I will,” David promised and pushed into her gently until he was buried to the hilt inside of her. For a moment, neither of them moved, and time stood still why they were just looking at each other. Then he began to make love to her slowly, making sure to move inside her in a way that would give her the ultimate sensation and pleasure. He ground into her as he moved his hips in a circular pattern over her pubic mound.

“Oh yes,” she sighed, “mmmmh, just like that...”

“I love you, Maddie. More each and every day,“ he whispered as he devoured her with hot passionate kisses, making love to her mouth and tongue, he was making her squirm under him as she mimicked his moves. Maddie was almost afraid to let go this time, so great was the pleasure; but when she heard David’s voice urging her on she went with the flow. Both of them thought they had reached paradise when they were overcome with the most powerful orgasm they had ever reached. Maddie’s lips curved into a smile. “David. That was wonderful,“ she told him, her voice shaky with the depth of her feelings for him.

A lopsided grin ran up David’s face. “So, partner... did I thank you properly for my very generous gift?“

Maddie snuggled into his strong arms, happier than she had ever been in her life. “Yes, and you are very welcome.” She smiled and added: “Partner.“ She loved the way that word rolled so easily off her tongue; she couldn't get enough of it. “Very welcome indeed.“

They were wrapped up tightly in each other's arms; Maddie had her head resting on David's chest. Both of them were in a state of post coital bliss. Suddenly, Maddie felt the need to talk and bare her soul a little more to David. Those few months they had spent together had changed her already; from a distrustful, often melancholic loner who felt the need to be always in control of everything and everybody, and especially of herself, out of sheer self-protection, she had turned into a woman who never wanted to be alone anymore, full of love and life and without fear. Now that they were going to be true partners in life and business Maddie felt her heart filled with contentment and a joy she had never experienced before. Finally, she had put her trust in a man. Finally, she felt free enough to reveal to him her past hurts and disillusionments. She felt the urge to tell David about the things in her life that had made her so doubtful and wary of men and true love. No, it was more than just an urge – after all the efforts and struggles it had taken them both to become what they were now, she owed it to David and to herself to reveal that bit of her, to dispel the myth that she had been just nuts, negative, not allowing herself happiness.

Her fingers began to draw lazy circles on David’s chest hair, “I know that sometimes I fly off the handle and say things that I don’t mean,” she began and kissed the damp hair in the middle of his chest David just listened. “And I know,” she went on, “that I sometimes jump to conclusions and think the worst…” She sat up slowly and looked into his dazzling eyes which were staring at her intently, waiting.

David nodded. “And I love you anyway.”

“It's not that I did... do that on purpose, you know?”

He raised his hand to her head and tucked a stray blonde curl behind her ear. “I'm sure you don't,” he replied softly.

Maddie smiled. “Well, David... it hasn’t been easy to bare my heart and soul to you.”

David nodded again. “It wasn’t easy for me either, sweetheart.”

Maddie reached over and kissed David on the corner of his mouth, “I know, but I believe I know why you’ve always pretended to be bulletproof.”

He raised a mocking eyebrow. “You mean I’m not?”

Maddie shook her head, “Nice try though.” She snuggled closer in his arms again. “You see, I know about...” she hesitated for one moment, then she drew a deep breath and went on: “...about Jillian and Tess, so I sort of understand why it was difficult for you to show me how you felt.”

“It was even difficult to realize and admit to myself how I felt,” David told her honestly.

Maddie gave a little snort. “You‘re telling me,” she said.

David kissed the top of her head. “I never thought I’d find someone to trust again,” he admitted.

“I know, but you still don’t have a clue why I buried my feelings for you for so long and then felt so nervous and scared when I realized I was so deeply in love with you,” Maddie said quietly; despite her determination to reveal her miserable past love life, this still wasn't easy for her.

“Care to share with the class?” David asked in a especially light tone, sensing she was going to take a difficult step, trying to encourage her. “Or with your favorite teacher at least.”

After a few seconds, she nodded with determination. “I do,” she smiled then sat up and moved out of his arms. Maddie went on: “I started to model full time when I was only sixteen, and although my mother tried to keep me away from the sordid side of modeling I did sneak out now and then to parties.”

David feigned shock. “No!” Then he added dryly: “You always had a thing for sneaking, didn't you?”

Maddie punched him in the ribs but laughed and nodded her head. “Oh, I was a little rebellious for a time,” she pushed her damp hair off of her forehead. “Anyway, I did get involved with an older man.”

David was wondering where this was going, but remained silent. He had always been curious about the men in her past but the time never seemed right to ask, and she had never really revealed anything – except for the fact that she never had let anybody stay overnight at her house.

“John was 26,” she went on, “and the photographer for one of my major photo shoots. My first cover, it was Seventeen magazine. He just seemed so worldly.” Maddie shook her head. “He was the most interesting person I had ever met. I loved to listen to him talk about all his adventures as a photographer over the years. We used to talk about so many things on our breaks from the photo shoot...” for a moment, her eyes turned cloudy. “Finally, one day he kissed me. I remember that we had been filming the inside pictures to go along with the cover. I was supposed to be frolicking on the beach. I was wearing a little bikini, it was blue,” Maddie was lost in her memories, “after we were done he offered to drive me home. I called my mother and told her I was getting a ride home from one of the other models. I knew she would not be happy with John driving me home but I couldn’t wait to be alone with him.” Maddie fiddled with the corner of the comforter as she spoke, “he stopped at a secluded part of the beach and...” She shrugged. “Well, anyway it was just kisses then.” Maddie laughed but it held no mirth. “He was shocked when I told him that I’d never been with a man, that he was my first real kiss. I think I was half in love with him even then.” David was listening intently, absolutely fascinated by her story, dying to find out more, hoping it wouldn't be too painful for her and that she wouldn't feel uncomfortable for opening up to him afterward. “Maybe puppy love,” she went on, “but the feelings were very real.” Maddie sighed, “long story short – we began to sneak around. I knew my parents would kill him if they had known we were dating. Slowly, he seduced me.” Maddie shrugged again. “What can I say? I was on cloud nine – I think I was feeling similar like you told me you were when you were with Tess for the first time.” David nodded and pursed his lips, deep in thought and intently listening at the same time. “After a few weeks he dumped me.” Maddie finished and looked into David’s concerned eyes. “I found out later that I wasn’t the first or the last girl he had played a number on.”

David pulled her into his arms again and ruefully asked himself if he, unknowingly, maybe had ever led on a girl like that. “I’m sorry,” he told her. “He was an ass.”

“Maybe, but to a sixteen year old girl who had given him her heart and her virginity it was devastating,” Maddie said with a slightly ironic touch to her voice. David was glad to hear that; that wound didn't seem to hurt anymore. “My mother thought I was ill when I huddled under my blankets for two solid days. Finally, when she threatened to take me to the doctor I left the comfort of my bed.” David smiled fondly; he could imagine Virginia very vividly. “It took me a couple of years til I was able to even think of dating again,” Maddie went on, shaking her head. “Go figure what an impact on a young girl's life such a jackass can have. Anyway, by that time, I was a successful model jet setting all over the world. I saw John in passing once or twice but always refused to do a shoot when I knew he would be the photographer.” For a moment, her gaze got lost somewhere far away, in the past. “I think my mother knew something had happened with him. She asked me once or twice, but I never told her. I was still much too hurt and ashamed. I dated a few guys, but all of them always wanted something from me; whether it was sex or to bask in my fame. Finally, I stopped dating for a bit.” Maddie snuggled into David’s arms. “I started to think that all men were animals.”

“And there goes Mr. Bigmouth and asks you if you were a Miss March,” David sighed and covered his eyes with one hand.

Maddie laughed a little, thankful for that little break that allowed her to replay the moment of their first meeting in her mind. “Yeah, that wasn't the best possible start,” she told him, the humor back in the corners of her eyes again.

“Where does Sam fit in?” David had to ask.

“Sam...” Just the name felt bitter on her tongue. “Well, I told you I knew Sam most of my life. I knew him since I was five and his parents moved in to the house next to mine. We became quick friends and we were also in the same class at school.”

“Private school I bet?” David threw in.

Maddie nodded. “Yep, Country Day School. The school was very small, so we all became pretty cliquish. Sam was by far the smartest kid in our grade. He was a nice enough kid we became good friends. Then when we were old enough to date it was only natural that we become a couple.” Maddie tossed her head.

David just listened. “It was innocent. We barely kissed.” Maddie giggled. “Sam – he was a perfect gentleman.” Maddie began to run her hands over David’s body as if she had to prove he was there and belonged to her.

“So, what happened?” He prompted gently and caressed her bare shoulder with his fingertips.

“We drifted apart when I started modeling. He was admitted early to Yale, and I was traveling a lot, and well – then there was John.” Maddie shrugged. “I told you I didn’t date very much at all after John and those other losers. Sam was always around at holidays, and one day we just found ourselves together again.”

David hated to think of Maddie with Sam even though he didn’t know her at the time. He felt irrationally jealous that Sam had known Maddie before he did. “So it was the Spaceman and the supermodel.”

“Well he wasn’t a spaceman yet, just a college student, and I was hardly a supermodel.” Maddie told him seriously. “For a couple of years, whenever we happened to be in the same place for more than a minute, we dated.”

That didn't sound like a big love story, and he was relieved about that, but David still had to ask: “Did you love him?”

“I suppose I thought I did. Maybe I even wished I did. But no, I never really loved Sam the way a woman loves a man.” she tilted her head and smiled up at him with a warmth and honesty that filled him with awe. “I know that now.” David was very happy about her words and kissed her temple. “He was nice and handsome and smart and safe.” Maddie laughed. “Safe was very important to me after what happened with those other men.” She nodded thoughtfully.

“Okay,” David said slowly, “now I get why you only dated eunuchs.”

“Well, not eunuchs but no one that made me feel much.” Maddie admitted.

“Then I came into the picture.”

“Then you came into the picture.” She sighed. “And wreaked havoc with my life, my feelings, my plans and my ideas about everything.”

David grinned running his hands over her body slowly. “And from the get go you knew you were lost.”

“Stop being so smug,” Maddie snapped, but her tone didn't have a sharp edge to it.

“You’re trying to tell me that if I was some fat old man that you would have kept the agency open?” David asked sarcastically. “My my, what a hypocrite you are!”

Maddie slapped his arm. “I hate you!”

David laughed and caught her wrist. “Oh please. Now you can admit it. It wasn't because you saw your future in that thriving business.”

She couldn't help but laugh. “No, it surely wasn't. Maybe...” he raised an eyebrow, and she went on: “Just maybe your eyes had something to do with it. And now I'm not going to say more, get it?” She showed a very untypical smirk. “You're already swellheaded enough.”

David let his head fall back on the pillow and laughed, a laugh that bubbled up from deep within; a sound that always managed to wash all her fears and insecurities away. “You bet I am,” he then said and pulled her towards him again. “Let me show you how much...”

David’s fingers made their way between her legs. Maddie moaned as her legs opened to accommodate his wandering hands.

The next morning Maddie was putting on her make up when David got out of the shower. He was thinking of the LaSalle offer and how great it would be for Blue Moon. He hoped he could convince his thick headed blonde to listen to his reasons for wanting to invest in expanding the business, and he knew today she would listen to him closely and not simply end the argument by saying that is was her business – because it wasn't anymore just hers to decide. And she had seen to that herself. David was still amazed at that big proof of her trust she had given him, and even more after he knew how deep her trust issues really went.

Maddie watched David through the mirror as he came out of the bathroom, still damp from his shower with a towel wrapped around his waist which hung very low. His hair was still wet and its spikes stuck up wildly in every direction. He looked irresistible. She felt the now familiar heat as she turned around to watch him.

Six days later, the following Monday, David, Maddie and Lou LaSalle met in the office of LaSalle's lawyer who had prepared the contract in coordination with Maddie's lawyer. “Why us, why did you choose Blue Moon?” He scrutinized LaSalle closely. “There are hundreds of detective agencies in L.A.”

LaSalle nodded. “True.” He shrugged. “I have to admit, the two of you impressed me.” David and Maddie looked at each other, and LaSalle went on: “With both your detective work and the way you... handle things.” He smiled. “And that doesn't happen very often.”

Later, when they were heading home, David, sitting in the passenger's seat, mused: “Who would've thunk it?”

“Thunk what?” Maddie asked.

“Lou LaSalle paying us a compliment,” he explained. “He didn't seem to think too highly of us when we first met.”

“Well... we were rivals then,” she shrugged, “kind of.”

“Yeah.” David smiled, replaying the memories in his head. “We gave him hell. For a moment he was afraid of us.”

Maddie nodded. “We were a great team, even back then.”

“You can say that.” David threw her a sideways glance and after a few moments of unusual silence slowly said: "You know, that night at your house, when you asked me to hire you... I wanted to make love to you right on those stairs."

Absurdly enough, Maddie blushed a little. "Yeah,” she drawled in an ironic voice, “tell me something new. That was always on your mind."

“Not always!” David contradicted. “Sometimes I wanted to make love to you on your desk. On my desk. On DiPesto's desk!”

“Addison!” She laughed and punched him in the ribs.

“Ouch!” he winced and laughed too, but then his voice dropped a few nuances, sounding very earnest. "But seriously, in that moment, when you were so eager to help... like you really believed in me."

Maddie was very touched by his words and his voice, filled with boyish disbelief, and for a moment she felt a little rueful for maybe not having appreciated him enough. "But I always believed in you,” she told him and quickly added: “Well, most of the time."

He swallowed, and his voice sounded a bit croaky when he spoke: "But you were ready to sacrifice Blue Moon to LaSalle!"

They reached their home, and Maddie parked the car. She smiled and threw him a mischievous glance. "I just wanted to get the responsibility off of my shoulders." She shrugged. "And I guess we were even – you did sacrifice the chance to be your own boss."

David smirked and pursed his lips. "I just wanted to make you think you're still the boss... and I didn't want to be my boss... an employee like me must be a pain in the ass."

They both laughed and look at each other, then said in unsion: "And I didn't want to lose you."

“C'mere.” David put his hand at the back of her neck and pulled her in for a deep kiss. “I love you, partner,” he said with warmth in his voice.

“Do you wanna hear something funny?” Maddie asked a little breathlessly when their lips finally parted.

“What?” He was a little distracted by the rosy blush that crept over her face and neck, caused by the heat created through their kiss.

“I still have that business card.”

He frowned a little, not knowing at first what she was talking about. “Business card?” he echoed. “What business card?”

Maddie smiled, bent a little forward to kiss the side of his throat and whispered in his ear: “Addison Investigations.” She nibbled on his earlobe. “I kept it all this time.”

David let his head fall back, eyes closed, while she kissed her way along his jawline and a smile of pure happiness spread across his face. “I always knew you were a keeper.”

“And I always knew you’d make a great boss.“ She purred.
